Their cap is fucked. The root cause is having 33% of the cap tied up in 3 30+ defensemen. Burns is 36 with 4 more years under contract. Vlasic, who is a bad player now, is 34 with 5 years left on his contract. Karlsson is 31 and I guess can still play but is injury prone and has 6 more years on his contract that pays 14% of the cap. Couture has been a good player but now he’s 31, has never scored 70 points in a season, and is under contract for 6 more years. The net impact of all that is that they are regularly overrun on defense and don’t have the cap space to get a goalie that can bail them out.

They’re boring but not terrible. There’s enough talent there that they will be mediocre but they won’t get overrun.
Soft opening is fairly standard I think. Give them a chance to gel before the debut at home.
