Iâve never thought he was actually that great, and usually would have ranked him around 15th myself, but the consensus among scouts and league folks has always been that heâs legit top 10.
Iâd say if Brady wanted to run more, theyâd have run more. IMO there is no way Arians or Leftwich are telling Brady no if he says, âHey guys, Iâd love to run my play action.â
Yeah, like throughout the 30 year run they had some other nice but not amazing players who I left out. I was going to point out Suh and Slay overlapping, but was Slay playing a lot yet? He was a backup for a year or two, IIRC. Regardless that team should have done better, although you can chalk one outcome up to variance. They lost a lot of those guys before 2015, right?
They lost suh to free agency (which they knew was going to happen but decided to pass on Aaron Donald anyways, something that has stuck in our craw for a while), and levy to injury. There was still no excuse for the Lions to be as bad as they were back then. Itâs one of the reasons I supported firing Caldwell. We just didnât know that Patricia would be so much worse.
Washington Commanders owner Daniel Snyder has say in whether findings from NFLâs investigation of team are released, committee says
sorry, we canât release anything implicating dan snyder unless he approves us to, them the rules
I looked it up and over his 4 seasons his teams had a positive point differential, so this isnât really accurate.
The scores really donât tell the full story. They made a lot of garbage time comebacks. Thereâs a reason he was called Pad Statford in Detroit. Look up Caldwellâs record vs team that finished the season above 500. It was something hilarious like 4-30.
Thatâs one thing I like about campbell
Heâs never punting in plus territory unless itâs 4th and 17
Being able to beat bad teams consistently is an underrated skill. Plenty of coaches struggle with that.
Lions donât do that either.
So somehow Caldwell has a winning record and positive point differential over 4 seasons despite being 4-30 against teams with winning records, getting blown out by good teams, barely beating bad teams, but not beating them consistently.
The math doesnât add up there. Maybe the aggregate perception of Detroit fandom is biased by some other factor?
More damning for the league is the fact the McDaniels is getting another shot after screwing everything up in Denver and then publicly screwing over Jim Irsay when guys like Caldwell and Marvin Lewis who led the Lions and Bengals to the playoffs multiple times arenât even on anyoneâs shortlist.
Maybe McDaniels can call good plays but he has a bunch of other qualities that made him a horrible leader and the NFL owners think those things are magically going to be better, but Caldwellâs flaws are somehow unfixable.
If the only path to being a head coach is working for Belichick or McVay and those two happen to have 90% of their assistants as white men then the league is never going to improve.
McDaniels learned his lesson and will do better this time tho (even he admits he really fucked it all up in denver, which is more than youâd think most coaches would do)
(yes, I know mcdaniels will not in fact do better)
We are biased against Caldwell because heâs black. Heâs a terrible in game coach
Yeah letâs kick a FG down 7 vs the bears from the 8 yard line with 3 minutes left
Or have 9 players on the field on the biggest play of a game
Or look back at his TO at Indy.
Dude is a great guy. Not a great coach.
btw, for all this things wonât improve talk
Sashi Brown just became president of the ravens after being the worst GM in NFL history on the browns.
you can be a terrible at any race as long as youâre an executive
(okay Iâm not gonna look back for the dudes who threw away the #1 overall pick and all that jazz and yes, I say heâs worse than ditka in NO)
this isnât a top 5 worst browns draft trade of the last 10 drafts probably but itâs hilarious this guy is now president of the ravens
Traded the 8th pick (titans took OT Jack Conklin)
for the 16th pick, the 76th pick and next years 2nd round pick
none of those 3 picks lasted longer than a month after they fired sashi during that season, yes the 2nd rounder didnât make year 2.
The browns signed conklin in 2020.
Ozzie newsom got the former browns two titles and was a pretty competent organization for his tenure.
But yeah if youâre not him or Tomlin you get pretty much one 2-4 year shot in the big chair and thatâs about it.
Even Caldwell got 2 shots.
I donât mean to say there isnât a problem, though.
Iâm not sure. Has anyone other than Caldwell and Dungy gotten two
Gigs?
