The C-Word

I’m not sure if you think we are in disagreement about this. May I ask you to clarify?

I’m just saying that one can’t always pander to everyone’s pet peeves in the interests of being considerate as, with the best will in the world, it’s just not a realistic way to conduct oneself. One can’t please all of the people all of the time, and all that.

The problem with this poll, and it is well-intentioned, is that you are deciding whether or not to allow a word that is really hurtful and offensive to a minority of people… by deciding whether or not a majority of people want to keep using that word.

Shall we poll all minorities to see what words are hurtful and offensive to them, and then ban them all? That seems like the logical conclusion here.

Ban the minorities, I mean. Not the words, obviously.

Good to see that you’re just JAQing off here.

Well sure. Healthy limits in all things.

I don’t see how that applies to the current conversation. Are you just pointing out that there are unhealthy extremes both ways?

Umm, yes.

Unlike everyone else ITT?

I am pointing out that “why can’t we all just agree to do x because some subset of people find not x hurtful” is a fallacious argument. Apologies if that is too Skansky-esque.

Yeah, no.

Not using a word that some find offensive is not disrespectful to some other group.

You can’t moderate respect. I’m not offended by the word, but I’m also a white male.

But there’s a group of people here who ARE offended by it. Accordingly, one would hope those who are from a culture where the word is more widely used would respect the sensitivities of those who are not from a similar culture.

“Hey, would you mind not using that word? It offends me.”

The response is either going to be “no problem, mate” or “fuck off, snowflake.”

No moderation necessary either way.

A “Florida Man” type word-replacement feature could also be used, as someone up thread mentioned.

Pretty sure you are either wilfully not seeing my point, or not following it to its logical conclusion.

Yes? Is this supposed to be a trick question?

I think a lot of people ITT are missing the whole point of why swear words exist/evolved in the first place.

Not a trick question. You do realise you will ban half the fucking language if you do this, right?

The only words that should be banned imo are n_ and f_ because they target specific groups and are used solely to bully and belittle black and gay people.

I guess you’re referring to the definition being another word for a cigarette.

Anyway, I suppose you’re trying to develop a slippery slope kind of argument or find a contradiction/exception that invalidates my general standard. I’m sure you’ll find one if you pry hard enough.

I’d be surprised if it was ever used here in any context at all. It’s another situation where there are more suitable words but depending on context shouldn’t be immediately punishable. I mean I can’t see it being used here to refer to a cigarette unless it is some kind of trolling double entendre.
