I do? News to me.
What does high level discourse look like? Wait, maybe I am! Can you give me some metrics I can measure against?

A good chunk of the user base has explicitly made posts saying shit like what you are doing has made them use this place less and this is how you respond? It sucks because every single person to make a post like that adds so, so much more value to this place than you do.
Why, goofy, why? Why do you always knock my action?
I’m doing my best to keep the averages up, bro.
Are you sure this is me specifically? Because this thread is about the first time I’ve posted here in the last 2 weeks. I know all us limeys look alike and all…
It’s anyone who thinks trolling other users on this forum is productive. Who thinks petty squabbles are worth extending rather than squashing.
I suppose this gets to the heart of the matter.
Is the onus on moderators to promote good posting or is the onus is on posters to post good and mods are just there to make sure everyone colors within the lines and aren’t supposed to judge what is good/bad posting within those lines?
What petty squabbles am I engaged in? I think you confused me with someone else, bro.
I have no beef with anyone here, except maybe jman as of 2 hours ago
I assume Aofrantic thinks that making over a dozen posts in the About Moderation thread over the last few days counts as extending petty squabbles.
I haven’t participated in that UK vs US beef at all, other than I got entangled in it by being invited to a PM some time back. I have been contributing to the conversations regarding the use of the word ■■■■■■ on this forum, but sometimes they got entangled in those other discussions.
You’re blasting straight past the question of whether you should do anything at all. I legitimately find it unpleasant when people use “irregardless”, it’s hard to explain maybe to people who aren’t bothered by such things but it’s nails on a blackboard to me. It’s a similar cringe feeling to the cringe one gets from seeing a social faux pas. I don’t talk to people about it because I don’t assume that my own emotional reaction to something necessarily indicates a real problem out there in the world, as opposed to a problem that just exists in my head.
If I say that I find it rude to have my speech policed, the response is like “hey man it’s not that big a deal to use a different word” which is basically saying that I’m being precious and telling me to get over it. But when someone complains about my speech, the same response of “you’re being precious, it’s not a big deal, get over it” is for some reason out of bounds. Either feelings of a hostile environment are to be taken seriously or they aren’t.
I don’t personally care that I find speech-policing arrogant, I’m a big boy. The issue for me is that it’s one of the ways in which the modern left creates an environment which is hostile to uneducated and lower-class people. It’s a way of telling people they don’t belong. This is how “manners” have always been used, as a means of social exclusion of the lower classes. What I’m saying is, I think it’s possible for both a lack of speech-policing and overzealous speech-policing to create environments where people feel unwelcome. And when I look at the liberal-left as currently constituted in the US, well, I definitely don’t think there’s a lack of speech policing, put it that way.
Word.
Also, some random word with an “ex” and a “c” when they mean “exacerbate”, and “mute” instead of “moot”.
Shibboleths will always exist, it’s human nature. Are they a good thing? Probably not, but I do practice it myself when it comes to language. The minute someone says “I was” in my presence, that person is dead to me.
Amusingly enough, I was watching something the other day, can’t remember what, but it had subtitles for the English interviewee for some reason, and every time he said “they was” the subtitles read “they were”.
Eh?
Lol good spot. Meant “You was”.
The confounding issue is that the mods only have a few blunt tools to use however empowered.
I’m sorry to hear that, Wook. I guess we play the hand we’re dealt.
I don’t understand why the debate over the c word needs to be a mod issue really. The software here has censor capability like 2+2 right? Just censor it, along with the n word and three letter f word, and let the posters who want to use the word complain about the censor over in the about moderation dumpster fire, or better yet, French BBV.
If nothing else having that language has to decrease our search rankings which in turn lowers the likelihood of getting new members.
