Huh, does Aberlour have a line of A’Bundah now? What was that aged in? The last time I got some there was just the A’Bundah sherry aged, and that doesn’t look like the right color. It was outstanding, though, even at cask strength as I recall.

Yeah, Aberlour is the distillery. The A’Bundah is their cask strength non chill filtered sherry aged scotch. I guess they must have recently started making the A’Bundah Alba you have, bourbon barrel aged. Didn’t know that existed until now.

Also, been a long while since I’ve had it, but I remember the Colonel E.H. Taylor barrel proof being at or near the top of cask strength bourbons I’ve had.

It’s been a while since I’ve had the A’bunahd, but I remember it being remarkable. I’ve never had this bourbon aged version either, but I may seek it out next time I do a liquor run.

I’d recommend dropping in a few drops (or even spoonfuls!) of water. Not only it will make it easier to enjoy the drink, but it will also open up so much of the character. You’d be surprised of the amount of flavors hidden underneath the surface that are revealed by dropping a few drops of water, covering the drink with a coaster, and tasting it after 5-10 minutes.

Yeah, I almost always put a couple of drops of water into a single malt. Especially a good idea with the really strong ones. I don’t like to overdo it but it does work. I also have this cool dropper I got from Amrut at one of the many tasting / promotional events I’ve been to over the years. (They make some good single malt from India, too. I think it was the Naraangi in particular I really enjoyed.)

In my whisky nerd years I used to experiment with how much water to add to the whisky using a dropper. I would start neat, write notes, start adding a few drops, then write more notes. I would end up spending like an hour tasting a 1oz pour lol.

I even got a smell kit, which had like 25 different fragrances tipically found in Scotch like peat, phenols, smoke, sherry, grass, cereal, and many more I don’t remember anymore. It was pretty cool to smell the fragrance and then go take a whiff of the Scotch and try to match the profiles.

Anyways, my whisky nerd days ended when my now wife moved in and said “why do you need to have 50+ bottles of Scotch using all the cupboard space in the kitchen?”

Old Forrester 1897 is a 100 proof whiskey with a Nashville that includes 18% rye in its mash bill. For the unaware, that is significantly more than something like Jack Daniel’s, but significantly less than something like Bulleit, placing it on the edge of what would be classified as a high-rye bourbon. I don’t go for those fancy tasting notes where people claim to detect hints of cherry or vanilla or caramel or bananas. I just know I like bold, spicy bourbons with a taste the lingers and this one fits the bill.

do you like Old Forester 1920 Prohibition? I bought a bottle of it for my father in law, haven’t tried it yet though.

Haven’t had it yet, but I’ve generally felt positive towards various OF offerings.

I really enjoyed Old Forrester 100 proof Rye the one time I bought a bottle, and it was a steal at $25.

Curiously, the entire NH State Liquor chain of stores are out of it, and I’ve seen posts online from people in other part of the country saying 6 months ago it was getting harder to find.

I hope it hasn’t been discontinued or derailed by COVID.

I’m not sure any stout slaps harder than Parabola.

Parabola is up there, but really? Even just the Chicago shit is better.

I lived in Chicago for 6 years. I’ve got a ton of goose island still hanging out in my beer room. Revolution, too. But in terms of a straight barrel aged stout with no additional flavors, I’m not sure what beats Parabola. Deth’s Tar?
