The beer, wine, and spirits thread

Excellent! And as a reminder, if anyone finds themselves in Ohio I’m more than happy to open bottles. Mostly lambic, but I do have a bunch of old stouts, too.

Yeah. I want to point out that parabola is amazing. I think revolution has the game figured out though. Deth’s Tar is the gold standard imo.

In further adventures of buying more beer than I drink, I got a package today:

Edit: Fun fact - I got mrs. spidercrab a Nest doorbell for Christmas (at her request). I installed it myself (humblebrag), but really had no idea what the point of it was. Then today, I was working in the basement and got buzzed that someone was at the door. I turned on my phone and saw the mailman holding a large box with recognizable red and white tape indicating a shipment from Belgium. I got super excited, and I’m now totally fine with the new doorbell.

Where do you order those from?

Normally my Belgian order is Etre Gourmet:

Especially now that 3 Fonteinen sells directly, and can ship via Etre Gourmet:

But this particular order was through Finest Belgian Beers. I happened to see them post on Facebook that they had Fou Foune in stock, which is generally very hard to get. So I figured I’d get 3 bottles of that (when it’s normally a 1 per person limit when I’ve seen it available elsewhere) and I’d try the 3 year vertical of Nath, which I’ve never had. Am I going to like a rhubarb beer? Almost certainly not. But now I don’t have to suffer from FOMO.

Has anyone added a shot of Bailey’s or some other alcohol to hot chocolate?

Peppermint schnapps isn’t bad if you like a mint chocolate kinda situation.

I have four bottles of scotch open at the moment.

Talisker 10
Laphroaig Quarter Cask
Ardbeg Corryvreckan
Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban 14

I’m not really that much of a peat head, just how it worked out with some other bottles being finished.

Out of the three peaty ones, the Laphroaig has the best balance and complexity. It’s not as iodine-y and band-aid-y as the 10. A little brine, a little tar/oil. Peat and smoke are just right. I could drink a lot of this.

The Talisker is a pepper bomb, but the smoke and peat are pretty pure. Still, the pepper is too dominant. Probably wouldn’t get this one again for a while.

The Corryvreckan isn’t very balanced either, but I am picking up what it’s laying down. If you wanted to say it has too much going on, I wouldn’t argue. Campfire, some misc things from the oak, and a sweet peat blast. Some salt and seaweed. I think this was $100, might just stick with the 10 or the Uigeadail. The 10 is dirt cheap for what it is.

The Quinta Ruban is fantastic, and a great bargain. I think I paid $50 ish. If you had it after one of the peaty ones, you might think it’s a cognac or something. Some apple, chocolate, almond, misc fruits and spices, that kind of shit.

Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban is indeed a fantastic deal. I like to have a piece of dark chocolate while sipping it. Since it’s finished in Port barrels, it pairs well with chocolate. Have you tried the Glenmorangie Nectar D’or? That one is finished in Sauterne casks. Very sweet but also very good.

Talisker 10 is also one of my favorites. I love the balance between the peat and brine.

A few years ago, I remember buying a holiday gift pack with the 10, Lasagna, and Quinta Rubin (12 not 14) for I think 110-120 at Costco. I remember liking QR. Those gift samplers can be good value if you want to try new stuff.

Found Alchemist beer at my new favorite liquor store today:

They also had Heady Topper but I’ll have to go back for those once I get through this 4 pack. I’ve never had Focal Banger, pretty excited to try it!

Canned on 1/17 so it’s pretty fresh too.

I had the Nectar D’Or a couple years back, and I only remember that (1) it was after dinner-y, and (2) I liked it a lot.

I love the salt/brine note in Talisker 10, that is the aspect of it that I like the most. I feel the strong pepper finish overpowers it a bit.

Can’t go wrong with a classic.

We tried this before but I want to try again. Any interest in a beer share?

Cheers!

Is that a parlor palm? Ours didn’t thrive :frowning:
But our figleaf tree is outta control, so 1 out of 2 is not too bad!

I’d be totally in for that, but how do you ship beers without a hassle? USPS? UPS?
