For those who suggested I try sour beers:

Mammoth Brewing Co. Gooseberry Sour

I think having a bit of sweetness to balance the sourness makes a sour beer more tolerable.

This gives me a chance to post the Vermouth taste comparison I did at home the other day. Three Vermouths at different price points: Dolin ($9), Cocchi ($14), and Carpano Antica (18).

Cliffs: Cocchi is very good quality at a good price. Dolin is way too sweet. Carpano is tasty but can overtake the whisky flavors.

My amateur tasting notes:

Dolin
Light color. Sweet, vanilla, cola, rosemary, huge amounts of thyme. Stays sweet throughout, too much so. One dimensional.

Cocchi
Light color. Lightly sweet nose with herbal notes. The taste has a bite, not too sweet, not too herbal. Medium sweet finish.

Antica
Dark color. Thick sirupy nose, woody, molasses. Quite a kick on the palate, brown sugar and lots of herbal tones. Bitter finish, long, like chewing a piece of bark.

Amarena is the way to go

yeah the dolin rouge is pretty sweet, as is makers, which is why i make it perfect. a standard manhattan with those two is waaaaaay too sweet.

I mostly buy the dolin for negronis, where I think the extra sweetness is a plus, I’m not buying two red vermouths.

idk maybe I’ll pick up the cocchi and see, haven’t had that one before

Listerman tap takeover at a bar in town. They are out of Cincinnati. Pretty good so far.

lol untappd rating is pretty funny thing to put on a menu

Not a huge fan of Untappd ratings. People heavily overrate BBA stouts and DDH NEIPAS and under rate elite lagers and browns.

yes i agree with you bba stouts suck @goofyballer

This is why I like how Ratebeer has two ratings, an overall and an “vs style”.

I’m not much of a beer drinker, but when I’m having a beer out I’ll usually get whatever wheat beer is on tap.

Any suggestions for a wheat beer I should be able to find for take home purchase in New England?

Bells Oberon is in season right now and is really good. I’m fairly certain they distribute there. Also check out Weihenstephaner Hefeweizen if you ever see it.

Weihenstephaner is the essentially perfect wheat beer and should not be too hard to find at a decently stocked outlet. Never had anything American that comes close, and even the German alternatives aren’t that close.

Allagash White is probably easy to find out there

The most expensive bottle of alcohol I ever bought. I stood in line for several hours a few years back. It’s been in my brother’s custody and I have some when I visit.

I like a good Black Manhattan sometimes, with amaro taking the place of vermouth. Obviously can vary depending on the particular amaro.

Forgot about this somewhere even though I just had like 15 of them on my trip. I would definitely go with this one.

Oberon is the goat summer beer

I just ran out and bought some Oberon, which is now cooling down in the fridge. I paid $9.49 for a 4-pack. I have no idea if that’s a good price or not.
