Summer LC thread

A fair amount of Jews came from the USSR before Israel was a state and even during the original Zionist movement (pre-USSR) and then a bunch of Jews came from the USSR when they were allowed to leave again in the 1980s. I don’t think either group were on average super religious, though there were certainly Orthodox coming from there both times. I think the influx of Soviet Jews in the 80s had a big political effect on making Israel more hawkish, but not because of being Orthodox. At the same time there’s been an increase in the political power of the Orthodox. I don’t know, but I think that’s more home grown and I think there’s a pretty sizable population of US Jews who became Orthodox and moved to Israel (or as they/we say “made aliyah”).

I follow a Russian-Jewish American on twitter (for Russian hockey info) and he’s very liberal but points out that many Russian Jewish emigres are very right wing, anti-soviet style reactionary.

Communism was always a red herring

Goofy,
you follow slava malamud on twitter? That’s who I was talking about. Did a big series on Chernobyl.

I got them all at once by holding the screen a few feet away and focusing on one corner, then add one at a time until you can see them all.

Congratulations, you defeated your brain.

I love optical illusions - this classic being a favourite

A & B squares are the same colour.

A customer fatally shot a waiter at a pizzeria on the outskirts of Paris, apparently enraged at being made to wait for a sandwich, according to witnesses.

The waiter’s colleagues called police after he was shot in the shoulder with a handgun in the Noisy-le-Grand suburb, 15km east of Paris’s city centre on Friday night.

Attempts to revive the 28-year-old failed and he died at the scene.

Should maybe have an emerging democracy thread in contrast to the Trump “failing democracy” thread.

Like if I’m a mainland China official, I’d be scared shitless of Hong Kong. Just given them what they want for the next 10 years. Cause if there’s a crackdown the Chinese economy, legitimacy, and potentially stability will face some significant risks and how-the-fuck-did-the-CCP-permit-him-to-be-declared-president-for-life Xi will be wading through shit. I’m sure the CCP that took over China was smaller and less motivated than the HK demonstrations. And how’s that make potentially “unfriendly” Taiwan reunification look. In taking over HK China may have accepted a virus that ultimately spreads to the rest of the body.

The last thing one wants in such a situation is overly rigid Chinese leadership.

Politics looks like something a lot of people in HK are willing to die for. That’s what happens when you stifle human aspirations.

Amazing troll. You can just do that with anything and tell people it’s an optical illusion. The two capital a’s:

@@@@@@@
@@A@@@
@@@@@@@@
@@@@@@@@@@@@ A @@@

are the same size. Wow dude, mind blown.

They are the same color. I loaded it up in Photoshop and both get this:

Not a troll - not sure whether you’ve missed the point - nothing to do with letters or sizes in this. The letters are just there to identify the 2 boxes - both of which have the same background colour.

FWIW the letters are basically the same color too. Although they’re so small that at least in the B - all pixels contain at least a portion of the background. So they’re all a little off.

Color pick A sqaure, draw rectangle connecting them, no illusion, sad!

I understood. To me it looks like bullshit, but I guess photoshop says it’s not. My point was that you can troll people with fake optical illusions (images where your eyes actually DONT deceive you) since the real ones look like bs anyway.
