Summer LC thread

Well, socialist in the monopoly/oligopoly sense propped by taxpayer spending on facilities and infrastructure.

I assume that when you have a fanbase that buys expensive jerseys (for which you make a lot of money) which advertise for other very wealthy companies (who pay you a lot more money for the advertisement) - you can afford to spend a lot of that money with the silly sign in front.

It’s was good to see the money men from Qatar get a shock that alough you can buy FIFA… UEFA is a whole new ball game. :joy::joy::joy:

The 2017/18 Premier League earnings have been announced and, despite claiming the title, newly crowned champions Manchester City haven’t come out on top.

The country’s top 20 teams split a pot of £2.42 BILLION this season, with the biggest clubs earning just under £150m each while the bottom feeders settled for a measly £94m.

How will they cope?

  1. Liverpool
    Actual league position: 2nd
    Matches televised: 29
    TV income: £33.5million
    Prize money: £36.1million
    Equal share: £79.4million
    Total: £149million

Plus European rights frome UEFA :sunglasses: That I’m sure is more on the TV rights but far less for winning/places.

Pretty sure American college athletics takes the prize among sports for the most dystopian capitalist business model

FIFA

College athletics is so damn depressing. The players have the easiest boycott/strike ever, yet every year a bunch of stupid old white guys make millions. Absolutely infuriating.

Wait, you’re saying that teams win money for placing well? This changes everything–I legit didn’t know that.

Yeah sadly there is just enough bags handed under the tables to keep this from happening

Dan Issel (UK all time scoring leader [played in the 70s], basketball HOFer) just had an interview with the local UK sports show. He even did a nod nod wink wink UK paid me to take another visit.

That house could be way worse imo.

I remember the same thing in KC growing up. Some homeowner had a beef with the local HOA and painted his house pastel striped. It also happened to be right at the entrance to Ward Parkway Mall - so it was super visible. I loved that house as a kid. I’d always ask my mom why we couldn’t live in a stripey house.

You’re on the same page. There’s a reason you just trashed the vile Hirsi Ali but not the other two! That’s the same thing happening as what you’re thinking with “the left shouldn’t trash, and should actually support, the reformers who come out against Islamic fundamentalism.”

Gonna read the nybooks article, but this is your periodic reminder that Niall Ferguson is a hack.

Edit: NYbooks article is ok. It basically points out that Roman parallels have been a trope in the US/UK for the last 240 years or so.

Interestingly, apparently the historical lesson of Rome in Russia is different. Putin wants to build a new Rome, not avoid a fall. I guess that befits Russia’s status as a marginal nation with great aspirations.

I’ll add an entrant to this competetion from the UK (couple of years ago)

Court rules woman can keep her red and white striped townhouse

A woman who angered her neighbours by decorating her multimillion-pound townhouse [in South Kensington, London] with red and white stripes can ignore a planning order to repaint the property, the high court has ruled.
