SARS-CoV-2: Electric Superflu

As an extra datapoint on why statistics on this are pretty useless: in the neighboring county an 88 year old man died yesterday without any Covid-19 symptoms. Because someone else was diagnosed with the virus int the home for the elderly he lived in on the day he died, they tested him post mortem. He tested positive and is now counted as the first „Coronavirus-Death“ in the county.
Would have been the easiest statistic to cook ever and had he died the day before, things could unintentionally have been different.

Rhabdomyolysis can have serious complications, but treatment is simple and a complete recovery happens IF you get treatment soon enough. Basically something damages all your muscles, which leaks proteins into your bloodstream, which clogs up your kidneys and causes them to shut down. The blood test you probably got was for something called creatine kinase (CK), and the normal range is 25-200. For rhabdo patients I’ve seen it as high as 24,000.

Basically all you have to do is push fluids like crazy, which helps the kidneys do their job and flushes everything out. But if you don’t get on IV fluids fairly quickly, you get serious kidney damage and possible death.

But yeah, if you are in some sort of crushing injury like a motor vehicle accident, or work out way too hard, AND start having cola-colored urine, go to the emergency room right away.

Well it looks like maybe the people predicting people will turn on Trump when this gets bad might be right. His approval for handling the Corona virus has already dropped 10 points to 50%. Still way too high but we still got a long way to go with how bad this is going to get.

His approval among Republicans dropped to 76%. At least some Boomer Trumpers didn’t like being told to die for the economy.

You seem tilted.

That being said, I envy those of you who can pick up and move. It definitely is an enticing idea.

Holy crap Quebec. Anybody know why they’re so much worse than everybody else? I’d have expected BC to have the highest rates.

They will still vote for him.

Not to be unkind, but the yales would have a point

The real revelation to me is that Quebec has determined (along with BC and Ontario) the simple tests analyzed in the individual hospital labs are accurate enough for confirming diagnosis. In the US aren’t we using either state run public health labs or private commercial labs?

Huh. No idea of reliability on this.

Also just sent a note to PA unemployment department. As an independent consultant not eligible normally but the new act seems to open up to “gig” workers. No clue if it matters that We are setup as a business and take most of the $ as business profit not salary or 1099. Will report back when I hear. Down about 2/3 in March and expect much lower going forward. Wife’s side ok so far but one call and she could go to 0.

UK deaths climb above 1,000

A total of 1,019 patients have died after testing positive for coronavirus in the UK as of 5pm on Friday, the Department of Health has said, up from 759 the day before.

When I was young and did stuff like have brunch at The Ivy I saw Katzenberg and Geffen slide by into the back room. Was pretty excited at the time.

After 5 days my dad called and was told it’s now 7-10 days for results. LOL. So much for NY testing being ahead of the curve. Told him he should have said he plays for the Nets.

Luckily symptoms have subsided, but he continues to isolate.

Wouldn’t really make sense for them to do that considering it’s still nearly impossible to get masks and healthcare workers still have massive shortages. Seems like all available masks will be funneled to healthcare workers for the foreseeable future.

Yeah, I was super lucky. I had no idea what rhabdomyolysis was before this event. I didn’t realize what was happening to me after the workout that caused it. The day after it just felt like extreme muscle soreness that’s typical from a hard work out, but instead of dissipating over the next few days it got progressively worse. The third day after, I was having trouble getting out of bed and bending my legs without extreme pain. I remarked about it to a random friend from law school, and she’s like, you could have rhabdo! A coworker of hers had just had it the previous month and had had to go oN dialysis so it was the only reason she knew about it, but she scared me enough that I finally called my doctor friend. If she hadn’t said anything, I probably wouldn’t have thought to get help, and it would have been a different situation.

Re: creative kinase levels, I’m pretty sure I was around 80K when they first measured me. The nurse taking care of me kind of flipped her shit and said she’d never seen someone with that level, so that was a little unsettling. But, yeah, the treatment is ridiculously simple considering how serious a threat it is. Now I drink tons of water all the time. I’m pretty lucky I didn’t have any complications or lasting damage.

How long are y’all leaving packages (boxes mostly) outside before bringing them in? 24 hours should be good right?
