Research Objectives
In order to rapidly improve our understanding and available control measures for SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19, NIAID is encouraging the submission of applications for Competitive Revisions to active grants to address the following research areas of interest:
Studies to identify optimal in vitroculture requirements and conditions; Development of reagents and assays for virus characterization; Studies to understand critical aspects of viral infection, replication, pathogenesis, and transmission; Studies to identify viral epitopes critical for binding neutralization; Studies to examine virus stability and persistence; Production of molecular clones of SARS-CoV-2, reporter viruses and recombinant viral proteins; Development of animal models of SARS-CoV-2 infection suitable for screening vaccine and therapeutic candidates and/or pathogenesis studies; Studies on the evolution and emergence of SARS-CoV-2 viruses including the identification of factors that affect viral host-range and virulence; Virologic and serologic surveillance studies of the distribution and natural history of SARS-CoV-2 viruses in animal populations and in humans at the human/animal interface with particular emphasis on host reservoirs and understanding cross-species transmission events; Development of sensitive, specific, and rapid clinical diagnostic tests for SARS-CoV-2; Development of SARS-COV-2 therapeutic candidates; broad-spectrum therapeutics against multiple coronavirus strains; examination of SARS-CoV-2 antiviral activity of existing or candidate therapeutics initially developed for other indications; Identification and evaluation of the innate, cellular and humoral immune responses to SARS-CoV-2 infection and/or candidate vaccines, including, but not limited to: cross-reactive antibodies from individuals exposed to SARS-CoV-2 and other coronaviruses; viral epitopes critical for antibody binding and neutralization; immune-mediated pathology or host factors that might predispose to severe infection; and Development of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine candidates that include emerging antigen design strategies, novel platforms or delivery approaches, adjuvants, or assessing cross-neutralization potential of SARS-CoV vaccine candidates.

Another nurse in Georgia said she was repeatedly denied testing, even as her own symptoms worsened over the course of a week. The nurse, who had cared for several patients who died of pneumonia but were never tested for Covid-19, was finally tested Tuesday – the same day she was admitted to the hospital and put in isolation.
“It was not until this morning that I could finally be tested,” she said as she gasped for breath between heavy coughs. “It is insane. And it’s infuriating. You feel you have to scream to even be heard.”
Red states are going to do everything they can to keep the #s low, no matter how many extra healthcare workers and other patients it endangers. This is serious Russia/China level shit.

This is pretty much a given. Only 5-20% of deaths will be correctly attributed to corona. The higher the death toll, the lower that # drops. If the death toll gets so high that it can no longer be hidden then WAAF anyway.
It will all come down to whether enough Americans see through the BS. I’m not optimistic.

White House claims that 432,000 coronavirus tests have been conducted in the US so far which would put the US 6th on that list in tests per million. Obviously it’s not the most reliable source but it seems to be the only source for that number.

Bought a bike and did my first commute this morning.
No coronavirus, but also it was faster and I got to ride along the river with actual ducks and stuff. This is WAY better. Should have done this years ago.

Health update: I woke up feeling fine. Same kind of stuffiness but throat feels fine. Maybe it was nothing or maybe this is the moment in The Stand before I put on bad makeup.
Same with SO. Family member is sick but she kind of always is so idk.

Just heard someone I know got it. He felt fine all day. Got a cough in the afternoon. By night he was having trouble breathing. He called 911 opened his front door and passed out. Woke up in the hospital. From feeling fine to hospital was 8 hours.
He was in rough shape but is back home now.
He is 31!

I havnt heard. Can’t be too long cause he was fine last week.

That graph of observed v expected has been bothering me. Excellent paper. Essentially the blue expected line is bogus as it disregards the impact social distancing has on regular cold and flu season. (And since those have shorter cycles than CV that term dominates the observed number early into social distancing).
When something seems wrong with the data there is usually some explanation.
Pissed I didn’t think of it. Finding things like that is something I pride myself on. I’m going to give myself a little pass as I didn’t obsess on it like I would at work. My wife would prefer I stay somewhat sane.
