Many countries provide two updates per day. For example, the Czech Republic has two updates: one at 9 AM and another at 6 PM.
Unfortunately, people are starting to die here of coronavirus. The first one was on the 22nd. There were two deaths yesterday and three today. The latest victim was a 75 year old with cardiovascular disease. So far, the victims were over 70 and/or had a chronic condition that made them more susceptible to it.
On a positive note, people are also recovering at the hospital. There have been 10 recoveries with 7 of them happening in the last week.
Daily testing increased by nearly a third in just one day due to the use of fast-acting tests imported from China which show the results in 30 minutes. This has resulted in more positive cases being detected.
Story in my local paper shows gun sales are way up in recent weeks. And some local stores have run out of ammo. I also have a couple of friends who are convinced that a depression will essentially lead to anarchy. I can’t even force myself to think like that. Real stories of homeowners shooting random home invaders are extremely rare. Plus it takes a lot of balls and not many brains to randomly invade houses not knowing who’s packing heat and who isn’t.
Maybe there’s something I’m missing, but I just can’t grasp the mentality. I was robbed at gunpoint at an atm years ago, and I can tell you, if they got the jump on you there’s nothing you can do. I’m not a gun guy at all. I’ll take my chances with my burglar alarm.
Left un-tubilated / un-ventilated, COVID-19 patients drown in their own blood so not particularly great TV. Like waterboarding but real drowning. In blood.
Ha. No. It was 1989 and in fact the ATM camera wasn’t working. Never got my $200 back. I think I heard if I had been robbed inside the bank I would have been reimbursed. As far as the bank was concerned it just looked like I made a $200 transaction.
When they got them in, they probably made an effort to test a bunch of medical workers and emergency responders to be safe… That’s my guess. Now they’re likely just doing people who present with symptoms or who are being contact traced.
other way round (opposite) accordingly to Cuomo in todays presser
Same in the UK. Early tests were spent on general public presenting (what rate is this virus spreading through the population… oh fuck, pretty quick) . Later tests reserved for essential workers and hospital inpatients (get the infected out of the essential worker system to stop killing the ill / elderly and spreading)
I genuinely considered getting a gun due to this (and getting it melted down or whatever after), but by the time I realized I should, it was too late. In a situation where I was likely to need it, I don’t think they’d get the jump on me - if that sort of thing was rampant I’d probably have a couple people stay with me and we’d sleep in shifts and someone would stay on guard. Or I’d use a home security system to wake me early enough to act. Hopefully that’s enough to scare anyone away in that situation, anyway.
All that said, I think if it comes to it we’ll see the military in the streets keeping the peace… And a 2-iron isn’t quite a gun, but if you come around a corner blind and take one to the forehead, good luck.
For 95% of them it’ll never go past cosplay in that regard. Probably 70% of people who buy a gun for home defense don’t even use it when given the chance. Now that said, in this scenario - guarding a stockpile of food in a food shortage that has let to looting, that changes things quite a bit. But I don’t think it’s going to come to that, at least not for more than a couple days.
