How the hell is Dollar Tree not limiting sales? There are always going to be assholes. You have to account for that.
My company went from “Everybody stay home until April 8th, fully paid” on Tuesday to sending an email to the entire manufacturing department on Friday begging us to come into work Monday because a company lawyer thinks we can argue we’re essential.
I realized last night the 100+ hour weeks companies pull when the quarantines are over are going to straight up murder people.
Couldn’t find it, but the other day someone posted a link to a story about how Tom Hanks might not be doing so well and I just checked up on him. Here’s a story that mentions the source for the other story which was Hanks’ sisters’ comments.
The other story had said that Tom’s sister said he was “not great”, but left off the “feeling better every day”.
I think that was yesterday afternoon. But who knows maybe it was 3 days ago? Can’t keep sense of time atm.
thats what I’ve been doing
Fake news until it happens to me or my loved ones. NYC is clearly just exaggerating their #s to hurt Trump.
I finally watched contagion last night. Mass graves were pretty scary. Hopefully it doesn’t get to that here.
yeah it was Daily Mail clickbait - a vague (clipped/out of context) quote and no substance.
NYS updates
15,915 tests yesterday
15,168 total cases in state 9,044 in NYC
1,974 hospitalized
114 total deaths
70% of deaths 70 years and older
80% of deaths that were under 70 had underlying health condition
My close friend’s office of about 50 had a confirmed case. The person went home sick on Friday 3/13 and got a confirmed positive sometime last week. Office manager sent out an email 2 days ago telling everyone to work from home next week but everything should be back to normal on the 30th. It is definitely a non essential business in a state(NV) that has supposedly mandated all non-essential businesses to close. Friend said coworkers are all acting like march 30th everything will be normal. People are so out of touch with whats going on right now it is insane.
Czech Republic is in a similar situation regarding mortality rate. We have 1,047 cases and no deaths. We’re not testing that much either. Looks like we’ve capped out at 2,000/day for a population of 10 million people. Wonder if there’s a different strain or some kind of immunity among certain populations. Could be that there’s greater awareness. Could be that asymptomatic people are being diagnosed due to their connection with known cases. Could be that treatment is being administered faster as more people are less hesitant to go to the hospital.
Speaking of the Czech Republic, the government is expanding the country’s quarantine until at least mid-April and is considering bringing sakoku back into fashion. Always on the cutting edge of suppressing the virus in Europe.
Fucking Donald Trump is gonna have a great excuse to fulfill his promise on closing the border between Mexico and the U.S. for good. But once one Mexican sneaks in with coronavirus, Trump will be able to convince more people that Mexicans are indeed sneaking in with diseases to weaken America.
I think when the local, state, or federal authorities start to put out info on what to do with dead bodies in your household people might start to take it seriously.
“We are prepared for an unprecedented number of fatalities in [anytown, USA], but we will not be able to retrieve all bodies of the deceased due to manpower and space limitations. Best practices are to grieve for no more than 1 hour, then wrap the body in a sheet and place it outside your home. Hang a white shirt on your mailbox to let collection teams know you need disposal, and they will remove the body when they can.”
Maybe then people will wake the fuck up. Probably not before then. Americans are stupid, selfish, and shortsighted.
Man. I think I’m going to try bugging out of following this thing for a few days. We’ve done everything we can in our house to protect ourselves, and the information I’m taking in each day is just compounding my worries.
Gonna try to take a break. We’ll see how long it lasts.

No, that advice was hot garbage and you should not try to defend it.
The advice was something along the lines of frequently drinking water to wash the virus into the GI tract. If the virus has already infected the cells no amount of water washing down is going to do anything.
If on the other hand someone sneezed infectious droplets on your food and you ate it, it’s not clear that washing that down with water is any better than regular swallowing.
I am in no way saying that Trump’s admin deserves a “pass” on anything. He’s made this crisis vastly worse in every way he possibly could have, and he’s almost certainly going to end up personally responsible for many thousand deaths and a terrible depression. What I am saying is that a big part of the job of a competent president would be fighting against the bureaucracy to respond to the crisis. I mean, what kind of insanity wolf regulation specifically bans testing for infectious disease during an epidemic in the first place.
That one is so crazy that I think you’re right–any remotely good-intentioned administration would just tear it up and figure out the details later (as soon as they figured out what was going on, which might not be instantaneous). The damning bit is the CDC botching their test. It’s very, very plausible that even if we had a good president in office, they get rolled by the CDC saying that their test is going to be better, faster, whatever. (And fears headlines saying “President overrules CDC experts on coronavirus test protocol”.) And then we’re still fucked, because the most lavishly resourced public health organization in the world can’t create a standard viral test that no one else has had any problems with. I mean, maybe we’ll find out that Jared snuck down to Atlanta between bouts of solving the opioid crisis and bringing peace to the Middle East to also sabotage the tests, but the solid bet here is incompetence.
Lol?
Not showing up for me, do you have a link?
I’m beginning to think that the Trump administration has decided that the best thing to do is to make it look like we’re trying to flatten the curve, and do so just a little, while making sure that this thing spreads fast enough to burn itself out in a few months.
Reason: That’s probably ~close to what’s best for the economy, which is all he cares about.
Evidence: What’s going on in the airports, which any expert at CDC could tell you after one cursory glance, “HOLY SHIT WTF ARE YOU DOING???” It would be trivially easy to have like DOD come in and set up some holding tents. It would be relatively easy to do some testing/separating before the flight.
I feel like we’ve seen this pattern with cruise ship passengers being released too easily, too. Also the thing with the federal workers who were exposed, not tested, and flew on a regular public flight.
