SARS-CoV-2: Electric Superflu

From a visibility standpoint for Joe Sixpack, definitely this day - combination of Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson announcing plus NBA shutting down.

I wish I could do that. My wife is a nurse unfortunately, so every single day she goes to work is an opportunity for us to get it. It’s resulted in a near constant state of hypochondria with us. Super unpleasant experience for people with mild-moderate anxiety issues lol.

Yes, I am. I haven’t been off my property since last Sunday. But I will need to go out soon, I only have about 3 days of food left.

I feel you. My wife is a doctor

I’m scrubbing packaged food with Clorox wipes, I’ve been soaking my veggies and fruit in an idoine sanitizing solution that I use for cleaning brewing equipment. Idk if that is effective at all at killing viruses but it isn’t harming anything so?

Thanks. For non-perishable food, would just leaving it in the car for a day before bringing it inside work? I’m not that trusting of my food-wiping abilities and tbh that sounds like a big pain in the ass.

I still think he has a future in politics. The little I have seen of him reminds me of Corey Booker or Gavin Newsom in that he looks and sounds like a politician. I don’t know if he will agree with him but I think he understands that a lot of politics is performative art.

Thanks. It looks like the timing is off for some of those numbers. For example the New York State number they have was announced yesterday morning, but they are counting that as an increase for today. I guess as long as they use a consistent timeline for updates, looking at the trend in new cases should still be informative.

Not denying that he may have a future in politics. Just didn’t think people should be excited about it based on one clip, so did a little digging.

These are cases. Hopefully the US curve just isn’t the rate of testing and it’s even more.

Anyhow, why I prefer the death curve for now. I shudder to think that COVID deaths are still being undercounted.

What is the psychological point when the whole nation truly gets it?

-500 deaths/day
-1,000?
-When a close friend or family member dies?
-When/if the administration finally acknowledges it?
-when/if foxnews breaks w Trump?
-never?

We really are screwed. I’m seeing so much stuff on FB and Twitter about how the 2 weeks is almost up and we need to get the economy going again ASAP.

My sister said we won’t change until dead relatives start stacking up and people realize there’s nowhere to put them. I think she’s right.

I mean we will likely be at 500 deaths a day inside of a week so we won’t have to wait long to find out.

My local police department and sheriff’s office has instituted a cite and release policy for all non felony offenses. Also released a bunch of low level criminals awaiting trial. Both good things imo.

‘Greatest crisis since the Great Depression’ - New York mayor

Officials in the United States’ hardest hit areas are warning of major shortages of critical medical supplies as the virus continues to spread through all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Total confirmed cases in the US have risen to 24,747 with at least 340 deaths.

Speaking on CNN on Sunday, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said his city is 10 days away from seeing “widespread shortages” of supplies.

“If we don’t get more ventilators… people will die who don’t have to die,” de Blasio said. “This is going to be the greatest crisis, domestically, since the great depression.”

New York state has been ravaged by the virus in recent days, home to more than 10,000 confirmed cases - almost half the country’s total.

Washington state, once the epicentre of the US outbreak, warned that it, too, could run out of ventilators by early April. Illinois Governor Jay Pritzker said on Sunday that states were “competing” for key supplies.

Yeah the timing seems off. This site https://coronavirus.1point3acres.com/#stat had almost all of those reported yesterday and seems to be the most up to date one although I haven’t verified the accuracy of all the reporting but they do link to the sources. Also the interface is nice on this one (you can toggle the graphs to log graphs and you can look at graphs by state which is nice)

is still basically a bad flu season. I am afraid that won’t be enough. It will probably take:

Hey, I see you post these often and not sure if it was asked but what source do these come from? I find some of them useful and would like to share a link every now and then

For some people it will be when a family member or close friend/neighbor dies. For many others it will turn on imagery. In a few weeks hospitals will be overrun with patients and bodies. Images of patients jammed in parking lots and hallways will have an impact. Images of bodies may also start to pop up. I don’t think numbers will change sentiment much. It’s just too abstract.

We placed a large bin in the back of our SUV. We are tossing any plastic bags in the trash and putting all non perishables in the bin and leaving them for 2 or 3 days.

We haven’t done this yet, but we are going to start wiping down packaged perishables.

We are also going to start soaking fresh fruits and vegetables for 1 minute in a 200 ppm solution of bleach, which is 1 TBLS in one gallon of water. The bleach should be plain bleach with no scents and additives. Then you need to rinse with fresh water.

I worry about my dad. He’s just not capable of doing this stuff or understanding why. Plus he has a steady stream of healthcare workers in and out of his apartment to help care for my mom. None of them are wearing masks. He also has regular (non healthcare) helpers that clean, cook, and go to the grocery store and pharmacy for him. I’m guessing soon this help won’t be able to (or want to) continue, and I have no idea what we’ll be able to do at that point.
