RIP Kobe

There is this weird thing where there are dozens of posts itt, including this one where people are saying “we need to be able to talk about this” or some variation of that. No one is saying otherwise. I haven’t seen anyone in media say Kobe was without faults. I haven’t seen anyone with any clout attempt to completely white wash him of his sins. Usually when you get this type of reaction it was because of a campaign to do so. But, that hasn’t happened here!

Many of my female friends* liked Kobe. My GF only really knew of him by her students yelling “kobe” when throwing out trash, and we went on his Wiki last night to explain the rape case with her last night. I saw female journalists on twitter I like not being able to handle the adoration for an abuser. It’s complicated, but I think this thread is trash.

So who’s doing all the raping?

A minority of men.

Yeah. I dont care about Kobe or basketball.

Things I do care about

  • celebrities getting away with rape
  • men being lionised for being a human being “wow. He loved his kids!”… while ignoring the rape
  • a rape culture where even in lefty forums like this we still see toxic shit like this happening

So yeah. I’m gonna post about it. Maybe you aren’t gonna change your mind. Maybe other will.

Like how much of a minority?

Do the maths here. Every woman you know has been sexually assaulted to some degree. A large proportion have been raped.

Who’s doing that? How do we square the idea that its just a tiny minority of men with the evidence of how widespread the victims are?

I didn’t use the word “tiny” and I don’t know how much of a minority. IANAE but it wouldn’t be surprising if many rapists went on to rape again.

I’ve seen the sexual assaults stats and they’re terrible. I had just split up with a gf once when she was attacked and raped in a public park at night, the aftermath of which I will never forget. She wouldn’t tell anyone else about it, so it’s much more widespread than people believe, but still a minority of men, surely.

Okay fair enough. I was perhaps arguing against a point you weren’t making

Toxic stuff like what?

Nobody has ignored the rape! At all!
Why are you making stuff up here? That’s nearly my entire point in many posts I’ve made! Who are you arguing against? What am I “changing my mind about?” This shit is performative and weird!

Unless you count the Epstein thread, this forum doesn’t even have a thread about sexual abuse! The Brock Turner thread (which hoooo boy from what I remember) on 2p2 is what, ~5 years old? That’s the last time a major similar discussion was had on here or 2p2 about sexual assault, unless you want to call the access hollywood stuff such a discussion, but it really wasn’t the same. Maybe one of you guys could make an effort on a thread for this very important issue!

I’d blame him, but after the first 5 times I posted that I figured it would be redundant.

If certain people didn’t want to re-litigate and/or ignore the case all this “performance art” and “getting in the weeds” wouldn’t have been necessary.

Somebody was exactly saying otherwise, that this is not the time to bring that shit up. And also dismissed “the situation” by saying there really wasn’t much evidence. It kind of took off from there.

And there has been a concentrated effort to whitewash this in the media. And some of those brave enough to broach the subject have been faced with derision, a suspension, and in several cases death threats.

You seem to have a very bad read on all this for some reason.

+1 to the details being much worse than I remembered

You seem to know everything about everyone, can you tell me what I should wear to work today? I have a couple of outfits in mind but could really use someone doing a soul read on me to get just the perfect hump day T-shirt off the shelf…

I’ve been thinking about this thread a lot over the last 24 hours… and I honestly still don’t know where I’m supposed to land.

Part of me thinks that Kobe raped a woman and then used a combination of money and celebrity to wriggle free…

And part of me thinks that a bunch of white people have gotten together to declare a black athlete guilty of raping a white woman (who was on schizophrenia meds, and was an aspiring singer who had just failed to get through to the tv rounds of American Idol… both of which I think are massively more relevant to her credibility than her sex life) who was looked at hard by law enforcement.

I don’t like either narrative at all and I don’t want to sign up on either side. I feel like this situation presents me with the choice of either potentially smearing a rape victim or being unintentionally pretty racist. I hate this thread and I hate this moral conundrum.

A lot of you are hand waving off the fact that there’s a long history of white women falsely accusing specifically black men of rape in this country, often with gruesome results for the black men. I think I need to look at myself for so often wondering if the woman is lying when rape accusations come out (at least until the inevitable 5+ other women come forward like happens 90% of the fucking time)… and I think a lot of you should recognize that race is a strong factor here. There’s no chance Donald Trump or Judge K would have even been investigated in this spot.

This whole thread makes me feel dirty.

She was “looked at hard by law enforcement”? Indeed, and then law enforcement and the prosecutors decided to press forward with a difficult to prove case against a famous and powerful man.

Fuck off

Like one of the most well respected, verbose posters on here (a former admin!) came out and spewed a bunch of rape apologia all over the place. What was supposed to happen? I’d be pretty ashamed if the thread ended up looking any other way.

Okay. I’ll be explicit.

You. Your posting is toxic rape culture.

“Why is everyone talking about the rape guy. They don’t even like basketball! Now is not the time!”

Cuse had some fucked up stuff too, and I’m not gonna reltigate that

If anyone wants context for the “schizophrenia meds” thing. This contemporaneous article gives some context.

https://edition.cnn.com/2003/LAW/12/15/bryant.case/index.html

Basically Kobes defence lawyers outed her medical history and history of suicide attempts.

“The purported suicide attempts are extreme attention-seeking behavior that illustrate the accuser’s ulterior motives,” the defense says.

The defense also says the accuser had recently taken an anti-psychotic medication approved by the Federal Drug Administration for treating schizophrenia.

Because of that, the defense says, the woman “may have a reduced ability to correctly and accurately perceive and relate events.”

The article is bad. No wonder the woman backed down.

Glad to see this semi difficult values judgement is super easy for you. Emmet Till says hi. Obviously Kobe isn’t Emmet, but he also wasn’t a similarly privileged white guy.
