I too have avoided most of the media coverage because I have mixed feelings on kobe, mostly as a player and personality.
Nichols and especially Ramona S knew him quite well and address the topic in a responsible way.
I was more of a Kobe “hater” than fan, although I definitely respected his work ethic and competitiveness. Those saying the rape incident invalidates everything about his life are way more off base then the ones who would rather not touch on the subject at this time.
Think it’s just a weird discourse on 2020 that we have to get in the weeds about every detail about his rape case and have no mention of how he played when he was finals MVP etc. The rape case is important! I think it’s a terrible part of our culture that clearly there are people here that do not care much about sports or Kobe, that are only here because of this.
I just think it’s a bad look on this forum that the overwhelming majority of the posts in the RIP Kobe thread are about that incident.
It’s like posting exclusively about gamergate in the video game forum. It’s important, but it should not be the whole topic and reflects what it is.
If it was spun off then I’m obviously wrong, but I thought this started as an RIP Kobe thread and was focusing exclusively on that. Definitely thrown off by the title, but I still dont think it’s the best. 99% of this thread didnt care about Kobe last week and wouldn’t have thought about him.
I think my main point is that nobody cares about goat fucking any other day of the year, we dont need a multi day discussion on it.
Do you actually think your pearl clutching is helping though, Johnny? Do you actually think that posting about this subject on a very small politics forum is benefiting anything? It’s performative given the audience.
It’s not productive nor counter productive. It’s theater. It’s performing for the audience. It’s racking up likes by being woke. I think it’s better to log off then post a lot about this if you’re so caught up you think you’re making a difference. Fight the fight, but also pick your battles.
It might not make a difference in the greater scheme of things, but it makes a hell of a lot of difference in my ability to look at myself in the mirror tomorrow morning.
If we really want to reduce the incidents of violence against women, we need to first accept that in the vast majority of accusations of rape, as studies have shown, the accusers aren’t lying. And second, if the facts strongly suggest that a celebrity has committed a rape, we can’t just forget what they did and go to their games and buy their jerseys and the sports drinks they promote. Because if you wanted to encourage a culture of rape, the best way to do so would be to endorse and honor the most visible members of society who have been accused of rape .
I don’t really expect to change minds. I expect to make some people mad because I don’t believe in the concept of “too soon”. Call it virtue signaling if you want, but I don’t feel obligated to cooperate with the status quo’s sense of decorum that enables a culture that I don’t want to be a part of.
Didnt grow up liking basketball. Never idolized him. Didnt like the Lakers. Most athletes are dumb, deplorable or both. I am saying that is is weird that we just had a celebrity death where the person was beloved. More than any death recently. The outpouring of support he got dwarfs Prince, Bowie, R. William’s etc. Everyone he met has posted stories about him in a positive light.
He also raped a women and got suspended for a homophobic slur. I’m not talking about his reputation. I really don’t care about it. I am saying that you are performing for the cameras and it is weird. This is very similar to the guillotine thread. It is a mixture of what people really think and being edgy. I thought the guillotine thread was fine, but it was probably right to just not do it. Very much a “pick your battles” kind of thing. This is the same, but even weirder. Someone super famous died and a lot of people want to spend hours of their lives and thousands of words to be read by ~50 people about this? This place is much better than 2p2. The discourse is way more intelligent, nuanced and shows this forum was a great idea. This thread is considerably worse than the 2p2 mirror and that’s a shame. I think it is clear people are making posts specifically due to where they’re posting. You post different stuff on facebook then you do twitter. I get it. But it’s weird in this case.
My best friend one told me “Death is not an achievement” so why would you stop talking about the bad things somebody did just because the person died. I was never much of a NBA follower. I bought access to watch the final games when Dallas won with Nowitzki but thats about it.
Once the news broke about Kobe’s dead of course there was some kind of disbelief but also morbid interest to know what happened. But after that life goes on. Every day people die far too young and wont get the same cover and their death might be even more tragic. Kobe got a special permit for this flight in poor weather conditions. If you think you should gamble with your life so be it but nobody has to act shocked when something bad happens. It’s the same with Schumacher. He was a national hero but in the end he fucked up his life because he took high risks. Its tragic but not more than the fate of other random persons. They lived their lifes as they saw fit.
I am explicitly not saying we should not talk about the rape case, or the homophobic slurs or whatever else you want to of his misdeeds. I think there is a performative want on some here to talk about those about someone they otherwise did not care about at all. I think NBZ saying something like he wouldnt look at himself the same without having posted about it is extremely weird! If you get to that point, please just log off!
Most of us have momentarily felt like killing someone at some point but thankfully something stops us. Maybe I’m being naive but I think most of us (men) here have not felt like raping someone at some point.
