So how quickly does a RIP Ben Roethlisberger thread jump into talk about rape? Does it even come up at all and turn out to dominate the entire thread?
It will be in the second paragraph of the obit
Absolutely it would. It’s not even “complicated” in that case, as Ben has literally zero redeeming qualities.
Big Ben has been called out in the NFL thread
Fuck Big Ben.
I think a thread after Ben Rapelisberger’s death will not bury the lead.
Grunching a bit on dinner break of a tourney…
I never said this. I said a range of possibilities exist, and I said a large portion of that range is that he raped her intentionally another large portion is miscommunication of consent that is his fault, and then there were other very small portions.
I never called her a liar, and even in the miscommunication scenario she would not be lying and I repeatedly said that her experience in the situation would be 100% consistent with a rape regardless of Bryant’s understanding of what was happening and what was consented to. I believe I worded it that she would experience it as being raped, while he would experience it as thinking she was consenting.
I also never called him a victim.
There are other things in there I never said, but I’m not going to quote them all and I’m not really sure whether your post was directed at me, boredsocial, both of us or anyone/everyone who is taking any position similar to either of ours, so I may be off in feeling like a lot of this was directed at me.
Same.
Thanks, I appreciate that, you did. I was trying to make it clear that I was not actually calling you racist by immediately pointing out that it would be unfair to do so. Clearly you misunderstood it, so I apologize for not making it more clear that I was not calling you that.
sometimes you don’t have a choice
I only came to this thread to say that helicopter travel and helicopters in general are more dangerous than the public realizes.
I recommend the Zach Lowe podcast episode with rachel nichols and ramona shelbourne. They both cover his legacy and do touch on the rape episode.
this is amazing.
I’ve been avoiding such media that I normally consume because I just find all of this bringing out a lot of rage.
I read this
I played basketball last night, and on the way to the gym, I listened to a podcast discussing Kobe’s life and death. In it, the hosts referred to Kobe’s 2003 rape case as “Colorado” and referred to “Colorado” as a “complication.” In the 16 years since that case, I’ve heard and read other people—journalists, writers, bloggers, hosts—call it an “ordeal,” a stretch of “adversity,” and other bits of euphemistic phrasing. And this is just what often comes from media professionals. Many others are far less interested in even mentioning it as anything other than an unfortunate blip in a great man’s life; a meaningless roadblock built by a money-hungry and fame-thirsty jezebel.
Does Lowe go beyond that in a way that I would be comfortable listening to?
I’m not sure who has been following the Felicia Sonmez story. She tweeted out a link to a story about Kobe’s rape history and got death threats, so the Washington Post did the reasonable thing and suspended her without pay (aka “administrative leave”) for violating a nebulous social media policy.
It’s understandable why, given her history, Sonmez would want to speak out, even if speaking out just meant a link to a Daily Beast story without commentary.
Sonmez herself came forward in 2018 with allegations about sexual misconduct by Jonathan Kaiman, then a Los Angeles Times journalist. He later resigned, although he says the pair had consensual sex and their perceptions of what happened differ.
Over 300 of her colleagues signed onto a letter supporting her.

Today she was reinstated, but she still has harsh words for the management that suspended her, questioning editor Marty Baron’s’ commitment to the newspaper’s stated goal of telling all of the truth.

In what way?
Read the part after what you quoted.
That there’s no such thing as “too soon”? What’s wrong with that?
Keep reading. This isn’t hard.
I’m not seeing what you’re seeing.
This Slate discussion/article seems to be using a lot of language that acknowledges/agrees with the general point I made.
