Neither of them is ever stopping, and moderation is the only reason jman/Jal aren’t still going on about spicy food or the c-word or whatever they’re always bickering about. Of course, pre-banning one of them is also a viable solution.

This week we had JT bring up CN trayvon posts from a decade ago, again. We relived the c word debate. The ghetto blaster debate.
People don’t forget shit. They love bringing up stuff from years ago. Anything that can be used to score points will be, and there is no statute of limitations. None of this was because of moderation. It was deep anger.

I recognize there are people who can’t watch an argument and not want it moderated. I think it’s partly this incompatibility that is the biggest problem…at least for me.
I’m not sorry the other site is invite only and anyone can veto. There are people there who felt attacked and want space away from the people who attacked them. There are others who weren’t attacked but felt sympathetic. If anyone here feels attacked by me or someone else on the other site, I hope they have a place to chat away from that.
I’m rambling and repeating myself, so whatever…exclusive, pre-ban…fine. But invite only is not theft.
Without modding, some feuds would still find a way to be intensely personal and unforgotten.
In your ideal non-moderation scheme, how would you handle two people who hate each other so much that they start digging for dirt online that they can use to attack each other? How do you sell you preferred moderation to someone with a Hobbesian view of human nature?
Maybe, but so what? If jal has some secret dig on Marty on the other site I don’t notice it because it doesn’t get about moderation treatment. It doesn’t consume the forum.
If you want this all gone, maybe @yuv is right, but you can’t make it go away by temp bans or a few permas. You’re going to have to perma, and maybe IP ban at least a dozen people. And then you can start a fresh experiment and see if you have no more drama.
I just think it’s hopeless if people will bring up posts from 2, 5, 10 years ago that have absolutely nothing to do with the topic at hand to score points. That’s where we are. It’s not a moderation issue anymore, because we’ve lost enough people and we’ve cornered ourselves into a place where there is no good solution.
At the end of any argument like that about an open forum my last goto is always that bans don’t work. Greeeer5000 will doxx you anyway.
How much is politics discussed in the discord?
Political discussion creates animosity. That’s why many non-political forums ban or heavily constrain political talk. I think all political forums will tend towards occasional rancor unless heavily moderated.
Prolly. Status quo seems stable. The only hope is a walrus forum. Or maybe a crypto discord.
How would a closed forum with your idea about ownership handle a seemingly normal user who turned into Greeer?
I think there have been a few squabbles in the discord that have been resolved quickly and amicably. Part of that is what goofy said and part of it is that I don’t think anyone there wants that to turn into this so people are aware enough to police themselves. I mean not only has their been zero modding and zero longer term conflict but to my knowledge no one has been disciplined at all and their are no formal rules. There hasn’t even been an issue close enough to that for discussion to my knowledge.
All that to say I am sympathetic to your point. Modding is only needed when people won’t police themselves and/or resolve or ignore the disputes. Arguing about modding here has been a big part of the problem although I am not sure it is the actual root problem.
Not letting this stuff go can’t be good for anyone though. I understand that people feel hurt. I would be lying if i didn’t feel hurt about some of it for a while. But hanging onto this stuff and creating enemies out of our adversaries here cannot be the optimal play. Maybe it has brought certain people closer together or something like micro alluded to yesterday which is good and fine but the angst I still see out of people about all this honestly just makes me feel bad because I know this stuff is still eating away at people enough to still spend this much time on it.

Dunno. We’ve ignored a little squabbling and in one case when things got a little hot people were understanding. People don’t fan the flame by saying “Enough. Time for a time out!” Any single poster on that site has the power to be a real problem and there’s nothing anyone can do about it. I think people get that and it moderates everyone’s behavior. But, maybe some day we’re fucked and the ship has to be abandoned.
Exactly the same. And you have people who fight here, but hold it together there. Maybe no modding does work best for groups this size. Maybe we should have been open to everyone, but the origin story is very different.
Maybe we should have all just gone to discord, but I didn’t really have any spare money to gamble with.
I may have partly wrecked a lightly-modded basketball discord because I openly wished for Kyrie Irving to die of COVID. (A sincere wish on my part, not some edgelording just to get a reaction.) Me not being banned and my posts not deleted may have played a part in some of them starting a second discord.

I want to clarify that fidget doesn’t belong on this list. I know he has a reputation because of something half-remembered that was half-joking in the published PM thread, but he’s not very feudy at all.

Yea this is 100% projection. I’ve called out posts by people on “my side.” And I’m no one here. You are one of the most vocal members, and You. Never. Do. This. The saddest part is that you had numerous opportunities to do it before the bans ever started and it likely would have prevented much of it.
