Reveal Thread: Walrus Grab Bag 2 - The Walrus Strikes Back

This was the entry I was most excited to hear. Flamenco shredding. It’s amazing.

In 9th place…and 5 points … Epica – Martyr of the Free Word (2009)

First impression: Dungeons and Dragons.

Later: A really solid opening riff. A bit downhill from there. Pretty good guitar work and tone. Vocals are painful, which is a shame because the band is great and even the backing vocals are pretty good. I just really hate these Evanescence-but-heavier acts. Hard to rank because the drums and guitars are pretty great. Unlucky to end up in 9th. Strong competition.

I will listen to it now. I don’t know many Slipknot songs by name.

In 8th place and 6 points … Dr. Feelgood – Going Back Home (1975)

The submitter sent two videos, which I didn’t realize at first. I watched this one first:

And I was thinking, “That’s a funny submission. A lot of talking for a music competition, but still….interesting.”

And then I had randomly put the proper submission in the playlist next:

I’m then thinking, “This sounds familiar.” And then it dawned on me to actually check the comments from the submitter.

This was the submitter’s comment on the supplementary video:

And I include for your pleasure the genius rhat is Wilko demonstrating his unique technique playing both rythm and lead at the same time. What a man

I like it! The combo of videos is nice too, though I tried to ignore that in judging. I didn’t blow me away, but it’s certainly good enough to go check out some more. Cheers.

Hmmm, a reprieve.

(Edit - I looked at the wrong YouTube version of what I submitted and it had no comments, but what I sent does.)

Yeah, I like it very much. Secures you top half in most of my categories and the rest depends on the competition.

In 7th place and 7 points,Dead Kennedys – Moon Over Marin (1982)

East Bay Ray at his finest. I love this riff and the surf vibe while Jello is going on about oil spills and other uplifting stuff makes the song.

DK are of course great, and there’s some nice bits of their surf influence on this one. Still, nothing amazing guitar wise. A nice, solid, familiar track with pretty good guitar work. Reminds me of mowing the lawn as a teen.

Still good though not something I would have considered for this category. Tico-Tico was impressive.

In 6th place and 8 points…My Morning Jacket – One Big Holiday (2002)

First listen: Shit bass and vocals are too loud. Gets better in the second half.

Later: Kicks in at 1:00, nice. A bit anemic. Is this live? Not a great recording. I normally eat this type of stuff right up. I like it, don’t LOVE it. I was wondering a little why this is a great guitar track until getting to around 3:00. It certainly picks up from there on. It grew on me.

I was really into this album at one point. It’s still really good. I remember live they turned into an almost metal band playing the “nice” songs off the album.

It’s a good album, haven’t listened to it forever but for some reason I thought cassette might like this track. Seems like I was partially right.
