I dig it! Will listen to the rest of the album today.
Still no sighting of a bad song.
In 5th place and 9 points … Michael Rother – Sonnenrad (1978)
I’ve been a bit obsessed with this album lately.
First listen: Cheese-ball shit
Later: Ok, there’s more going on here. I’ve bounced around thinking that was alternately epic, boring, video game adjacent (in a bad way) and video game adjacent (in a good way).
In the end, I feel like this:
Yeah, I dig this. Pretty cool.
Night night, all.
(It is epic, btw.)
I have an alternate song choice to post when the reveal is done/ Ultimately I didn’t want to submit the same artist to multiple categories so went with this, which I thought was maybe a better choice even though I think I like the guitar parts better in the other song.
I do that sometimes too. I try not to submit a band I’ve submitted before. Doesn’t always work that way, but I try.
In 4th place with 10 points … Los Lonely Boys - Oye Mamacita
First impression: The ‘ole head bob. Good sign.
Later: Great opening riff. Very different than other submissions. Really stuck out in the playlist, which I’m sure helped the placing. I heard tons of standard blues-y bar band tripe adjacent to this track as a yout. But these guys take it to the next level. A great track that shows what those trash bands were going for. Nice one.
C-C-C-Combo breaker. Not saying it’s bad but it’s not for me.
Podium time…
Doesn’t sound like mine.
The bronze metal and 11 points goes to…Judiciary - The Axis of Equality (2016)
First impression: Nice.
Later: Nice to hear something a little different. I said yesterday that no one submitted something that I might have. This submission had escaped my playlist! Disaster avoided. I might have submitted something like this, depending on the host. Great THICK guitar tone. HEAVY. You always have to worry with these bands about whether the vocalist will ruin a good thing. Not so here. Kid’s got it. Nice one. A little short. I wanted more!
Here we go…
Who submitted Freebird?
The silver medal and 12 points goes to … Garbage and Screaming Females – Because the Night (2013)
First impression: Shirley Manson is such a babe.
Later: I like it. The vocal melody is really strong. Nice (though quick) solo at the mid point. And again at 3:40 ish. Sick. The studio footage is cool. I love that behind the scenes shit.
There are some interjections that seem like mistakes from the piano and drums. WTF at the crash symbols. 2:35. 3:21.
Kinda funny to splice in footage that makes it look like Marissa is watching herself solo. :D
Really cool song with some weird mixing hiccups. Cheers.
The song starts at 0:31 on youtube. I have always loved Shirley Manson’s voice but before this song I haven’t heard of Maria Paternoster or Screaming Females. I love what they did with the song and her solo to finish out the song is great.
Bring a bucket and a mop.
