Rush concluded the good songs with minor flaws section. From here on out there will be only songs that I liked a lot.

This one was mine. BTW, this post is coming mid-hike from around 10000 feet.

That’s impressive. Not as impressive as making the podium in a Walrus but still. I hope you post some pictures.

In 5th place scoring 9 points: “The Deadly Rhythm” by Refused

Refused’s “New Noise” will be known to some of you and was an instant-classic in the 90s. This is from the same album that I will have to give another spin. When I listened to it nothing besides “New Noise” stood out but that might have been an unfair bar to set.

“The Deadly Rhythm” sounds like a punk band stormed the stage in a jazz club and the jazz combo decided to just roll with it. So it’s really something else and made me appreciate the song much more. If this were played as a straight hardcore punk song I would have enjoyed it much less. There always seems to be several things going on at the same time. We get all of that with a kick-ass heavy sound. I wish I could have given this more than 9 points.

This is on the way to Cecret Lake, Utah. I’m out of shape with bad knees, so I’m tapping out before I get to the lake.

That looks beautiful. I feel a bit of envy.

In 4th place scoring 10 points: “Father Dagon” by Ultar

[Note: The submission came with the Spotify and the second Youtube version which is 1.5 minutes shorter than on Spotify. The ranking is based on the full Spotify version. Would it have made a difference? I have listened to the shorter version only once and after the rankings were finalized. I don’t think it would have changed anything.]

Yeah, this will not be everybody’s cup of tea, quite possibly not for anyone except for the submitter and me. Ultar is a Russian black metal band that I already knew from Loudwire’s Best of 2019 list.

Some black metal bands have the tendency to blast you in the face from the first to the last note for12 songs in a row which has its time and place. It can also be monotone and boring quite easily. Fortunately this is not what these young lads are doing.

It’s starts out with a nice 2 minute intro that slowly builds up intensity before …. you get the full blast to the face. Then they change gears a couple of more times during the song. This switching back and forth between more melodic and raw aggression parts is something I really like. The inclusion of a keyboard will offend many a black metal purist but it nicely adds to the atmosphere.

This could have made the podium and was in a dead heat with 3rd place just a few hours ago and these two were last songs I hadn’t assigned their final ranking. It only misses because of an arbitrary tiebreaker I have chosen.

That was a lot of text for a song that most will turn off at about the two minute mark.

That’s another surprise. My guess was seities. I would have done really bad guessing for this category.

The name of the album is The Shape of Punk to Come. From a Swedish hardcore band. That’s quite the delusion of grandeur imo.

More jewsplaining fun facts - the name is probably a reference to The Sound of Jazz to Come, the 2nd album of Nation of Ulysses, a band I submitted to seities category and received the same 9 points for.

edit - lol, i just noticed i already blathered about that crap in the comments. god i need to write less words in my entries :(

Some unfortunate blackface in the video thumbnail. Not sure what the deal is there, but I figured it was only fair to leave it in after locking in the track based on spotify listens alone.

Womp womp. Such a thin line between this and a podium! Glad you took something away from it at least. This was a song I randomly came across in my walrus research that I thought was pretty badass and something you might enjoy.

Checking in to claim Elvis. The King on a nodium for shame! Must now sleep, will disparage the other entries in the morning

Your instinct was correct. It was close but no cigar.

Up first …err… third on the podium we have… This is confusing.

In 3rd place scoring 11 points: “Kyūsei Argyros” by Yōsei Teikoku

[NOT ON SPOTIFY]

I saw the artist and song title in the list and wondered: is that japanese? Greek? Turkish? I immediately dreaded some obscure experimental fancy pants avant-garde music, clicked on the link:

From the start the drummer is certainly earning his keep. He and the background choir had me hooked immediately. I like the groovy guitar sound and the solo isn’t bad either. The singer’s girlish voice works really well for me, too, for the most part and is a nice contrast to the metal sound. The chorus gets into cheesy pop territory but I didn’t even mind it that much. The growls are unnecessary.

Why is this on the podium and not Ultar? Introducing me to a new artist gave it an edge.

In 2nd place scoring 12 points: “The Search” by NF

The drums coming is more than just lampshaded but it’s still one of my favorite moments of the song. The parts where he spits his lines like a machine-gun are also great. I have always loved that rapid fire delivery like for example Busdriver in “Me-Time” or Busta Rhymes in everything but especially “Look at me now”. You can hardly ever go wrong when adding strings to your song and they make this track sound really dramatic. As is befitting the category the sound is overall very varied.

I am not going to do a literary analysis or say outright that the song has gravitas but it helps that the lyrics seem to be about something.
