This is a high calibre reveal we got goin on!
Philip Glass is like a dead Pauwl give away. Edit: I assume pyat likes him as well
When I read this I knew I was next. At least I can go to bed now.
Have a good night. If you have trouble sleeping you can put on your song.
Sorry, couldn’t resist.
In 9th place scoring 5 points: “Yield To Temptation” by After Forever
After Forever is one of many female fronted symphonic metal bands that sprung up like mushrooms in the late 90s/early 2000s. I have their albums but I rarely feel the urge to listen to them. Their cover version of “Who wants to live forever” was on my short list for NotBruceZ’s category though.
The female vocals you hear are by Floor Jansen who went on to become the front woman for Nightwish. On this track she is relegated to a support role which should be a crime. The harsh vocals and instrumentals are alright but nothing special. There was a song in my last grab bag category that had similar problems. I would have liked this much better 15-20 years ago when this style was still a bit fresher. It’s an okay song to listen to but I won’t be adding it to any playlist.
Made it off nodium!
And…
Only 2 spots above
I figured After Forever would be a change up from the obvious Epica/Nightwish options.
You beat Elvis and the Beatles.
Shoulda just done Ghost Love Score and called it a day
I’m the one with the hipster music reputation, but this guy is using ‘sounds like The Beatles’ as a pejorative! Too far!!
In 8th place scoring 6 points: Daughter of the Dark God (Metal Cover) by FamilyJules (Feat. Adriana Figueroa)
[NOT ON SPOTIFY]
This is the song I struggled the most with and it pains me to put this down here. I really wanted to like this and it has its moments, great moments even. Unfortunately the rather generic metal sound always pulls me out of it like when suspension of disbelief breaks while watching a movie. Maybe the original didn’t lend itself to a metal cover. I don’t know. It isn’t all bad. I liked the solo for example but the rest for the most part feels a bit basic.
The parts where Adriana Figueroa sings are fantastic and with better instrumentals this could have not just finished in 1st place but become one of my current favorite songs. I could listen to her sing for hours and will check out some of her other works. It’s on her strength alone that this song gained several places. Alas, see the paragraph above.
This is one of the examples where the whole is less than the sum of its parts.
You would have put me in a very tough spot. Can I put Nightwish last in a Walrus that has Celine Dion in it?
That’s right
You said “no operetta” (not even sure what that means, but figured it’s similar enough to Ghost Love Score) so that’s why I went with the more male-heavy song and stayed away from Nightwish.
Yeah Celine was me. Totally expected.
I realized after I submitted that I approached this in totally the wrong way…you wanted songs to actually listen to, and I submitted something that was so ridiculously over the top that it moved into satire/joke category.
I mean, seriously. Just watch that absolutely ridiculous video.
I love her cover of All By Myself
The way I see it we are two people haggling on a bazaar. I am willing to pay 13 points for your wares but right now you are only offering your wares that are meant for tourist. I know you have the good merchandise somewhere in the back.
We’ll negotiate some more and then we’ll make a deal we’ll both be happy with.
In 7th place scoring 7 points: “Get The Party Started” by Shirley Bassey
Get the Party Started - song and lyrics by Shirley Bassey | Spotify
I know and like the original version by Pink and Shirley Bassey’s deep voice really adds a certain je-ne-sais-quoi to it. Ultimately, this was hurt by familiarity. On repeated listens it kept dropping in the rankings and I believe because I have already heard Mrs. Pink sing it a number of times. Still, it’s a good song and I enjoyed it for the most part.
In 6th place scoring 8 points: “Lock And Key (live)” by Rush
Pauwl’s Note: Song should start at 43:34 into the video
My note: the ~first minute is a black&white movie clip

I am surprised this got as high as it did. I could never get into Rush for a couple of reasons. Most importantly there is Geddy Lee’s squeaky singing and secondly they like to turn the prog up to 11. Whoever sees this as positives will likely think Rush is amazing. I don’t dislike them but I am not a fan either.
The song we have before us is actually a good example to show why someone might like Rush. Despite being only a trio they have a very rich sound. The drumming is impressive and I especially like the guitar solo. Thankfully Lee doesn’t go full “Tom Sawyer” [For those not familiar with that song: “wailing” and “squealing” are both accurate descriptions].
All this adds up to a good rock song.
omg, someone else who never got into Rush! I feel like you and I are the only ones on the planet. Meh.
and don’t even get me started on Nirvana
