Apparently partaking in a walrus does not prevent assisting in dinner preperation. Dinner is prepared and I’m still alive

I love myself today - Bif Naked
Catchy af. “I love myself today. Not like yesterday. I’m cool. I’m calm. I’m gonna be ok.” Another burst of positivity. If I’m not careful this positivity could actually take hold!
This was fun. Sorry it didn’t get more points.
Oh man, I forgot all about Bif Naked. She is fun.
Gah. This reveal is absolutely brutal. I can’t believe I am only giving this one 8 points.

Ghost Town - The Specials
My first listen I was like “oh wow, what even is this!"
Its like some combination of reggae and…a few other genres. This is really distinct, and really cool. I knew this was going somewhere in the top half from the first time I listened to it. Really great pick that I suspect some others may appreciate. Love that bit at 1:02 every time I hear it: “too much fighting on the dance floor”.
Median it is.
Sounds like the competition is brutal, so happy with 7th.
It really is. The bottom half are all like “yeah I’m cool with this!” and the top half are all “this would usually podium fml"
2 ska songs in this category and both aren’t me. Big fan of ghost town. I almost submitted it to Skydiver category, but Coventry might not be the most known destination.
I actually play this song in my head whenever I drive downtown here. The only reason I wouldn’t submit it is out of fear that it’s too well known, but if it isn’t that big in the US/Australia, that’s a great entry imo.
I like this one. Very cool.
This was mine. I was genuinely expecting you to hate it so happy to take a top half.
Who am I trying to kid, can’t believe it didn’t win
Yeah I looked up The Specials because I had never heard of them before. I saw they had lots of listens on spotify, but completely new to me.
Google told me the Specials never charted in America so I was interested to know if it was a well known song over there
I feel like this category is going to be a lot of fun to listen to when I get a little time (currently leaving my toddler’s dentist appointment). Also still alive and slightly surprised about it given the competition!

Spectra Sonic Sound - Nation of Ulysses
Submitter says: One of the best bands of one of the best scenes ever (The late 80’s D.C. Hardcore Punk scene). NOU were a different beast and are really worth a dive-in if you aren’t familiar and super fun to reminisce in if you are familiar.
Fuck me, this is great. Really dig the sound - almost feels like I am in a dingy bar and these guys are up on the stage thrashing it out. I really dont listen to much music from before the 2000’s so while it’s risky to submit something older than that I am even more pleased when that risk pays off. Excellent scream at 1:35. Cracking submission.
It’s funny how 80’s up to mid 90’s stuff from the UK were pretty known in Israel but are relatively obscure for Americans. Ghost town would still get radio airplay there from time to time.
Oh man, I was expecting a podium here
I’m pretty sure NOU were a direct influence of 2000’s band you like, so figured you’d appreciate it if you’re unfamiliar. They’d be the best dressed band in the dingy bar, I can tell you that much.
Most people I knew agreed that was probably the single of the year, in a year that had Tainted Love, Wordy Rappinghood, Reward and Don’t You Want Me.
It it’s any consolation I am currently writhing around on the rocks in a state of distress.
Really dig that. Nice one.
The Specials probably would have podiumed in my category
Just listened to “It’s You”, which Wikipedia tells me hit #29 on the Modern Rock charts here in 1998.
It sounds very vaguely familiar, the kind of song that I heard maybe 3 or 4 times back in 1998 and then never again until today.
