weird, I recall my local station playing them a lot when I was growing up, but as I’ve mentioned before, that station was an outlier.
Besides Ghost Town, this song immediately pops into my head

Sic Transit Gloria…Glory Fades - Brand New
I’ve listened to a bit of Brand New before and while I do remember liking this track it had fallen off my radar. This is a really great read on the sort of stuff I like. The three podium songs were completely new to me which is probably what gave them the edge, but that’s just down to bad luck as opposed to the song itself.
Yeah this one sounds familiar too.
I changed the song for your category 3 times so I just assume all three would have podiumed.
Love this song.
These are all pretty good tbh. Screamy people know what’s up.
I now have three 5th place finishes out of 5 categories. The place you get mildly excited during the reveal only to be crushingly disappointed with your mediocrity.

I’m So Sick - Flyleaf
Ok so it turns out the submission was the second one (the acoustic) but when I initially got my entries I just built my playlist in Spotify and it was the album version I was listening to (the first one I linked).
This just really worked for me from the first listen. The vocals are really catchy. A really good alt/nu-metal track that reminds me of a lot of the music I listened to in my early 20’s….and after further research it seems this is precisely the time period when this came out.
So while we wait for the 3 good but not as good songs that about to podium, I will share this piece of Wiki on Nation of Ulysses.
Nation of Ulysses’ music was noisy and manic, but they also had a strong free-jazz influence. The group embodied a rejection of the 1960s and 1970s music and styling by rejecting drug use and advocating that punk youth dress nicely and sensibly. To this end, the liner notes of 13-Point Program to Destroy America states the band’s aim “To dress well, as clothing and fashion, are the only things which we – the kids – being utterly disenfranchised, have any control over.”
I also want to add that seities wrote:
“Anything from 90’s onwards is probably going to have a better chance a high ranking”
The album was released in '91. There was no mention of millennium preferences
I listened to The Make-Up a bit when they were around but never followed threads backwards, another musical mistake it seems. Along with submitting Tim Buckley
Two songs left, and even in a category that was so incredibly strong, these two stood apart as “special” to me. Probably also the least general-public friendly of the entire list.
You need to go back to basics, son. Too much FPS. Bring your A game. etc
It’s funny you say that as I genuinely thought you might have submitted that track for some reason.
Yuv - please note that this is a compliment of the highest order.
See above, I blew it
don’t patronize me with your shiny double digit point finish.

Arms - Genghis Tron
Wow did this one grow on me. On my first run through I just got hit with the uncomfortable spasms of noise at the start and I think I kinda switched off and immediately had it pegged for the nodium. A few listens later and I started to really love the parts between the noise-spasms.
Really catchy beats surrounded with beautiful soundscapes. That took me to really appreciating the spasms of noise/screaming - they bring a dichotomy that accentuates the beauty. That’s when the whole piece really clicked for me. Its like it starts of as this violent overnight storm, and as the song goes on the sun starts to break through, promising the beauty and tranquility of a new dawn which arrives over the last 40 seconds of the track. Sorry for the terrible analogy…
Absolutely killer submission. I’m going to listen to this a lot.
This one was mine. I am also familiar with the Specials, if that means anything.
@Pauwl with the insta like, lol. This one’s me and I guess his is the gold. Glad you liked it!
edit - i suck at following who sent what
