Reveal Thread: Walrus Grab Bag 2 - The Walrus Strikes Back

Expecting a nice mid tier finish although I’d be less surprised with a nodium than a podium. Feel free to surprise me. I thought about submitting something I knew you would like but I was worried about being penalized for familiarity.

My track here is an absolute barnstormer, possibly my favourite submission, but given the philistine judging once gave Leonard Cohen last place I’d be a fool to expect justice.

Still on track for a reveal to start in about 3 hours.

It was interesting for me to see the results of the poll I put up on whether it was easy to find a song for this category. I probably wouldn’t run this category again given some people found it quite difficult. I would really rather allow people to connect something they like and want to share, rather than having to dig for something that might fit the requirement. But there was not one song in this group that I disliked. Well…technically there was half a song, but I’ll get to that later ;-)

As I was listening I started to reflect on when I even started to like screams in music. It didn’t take me long to remember that my first real band obsession was Nirvana, so there we have it.

Still, there are so many ways to bring that into a song, whether it’s a 2 second growl somewhere, a 15 second wail, or screaming every word. And even having built up quite a tolerance for it given my early infatuation with grunge and metal, and my more recent interest in punk hardcore, I still find it completely off-putting in a lot of cases. Even within punk hardcore where screaming every word is about standard, I can’t listen to a lot of bands because I don’t like the particular way they scream the lyrics.

I guess it is one of those elements for me that can make me switch off a song after 5 seconds and never want to hear it again, or it can completely energize me or even give me goosebumps.

Anyhow, given the polarizing nature of screams in music I guess it will be interesting to see if others take something new away from this category. I certainly have.

I’ll be amazed and, what’s more, downright distraught if Diamanda Galas doesn’t make an appearance here.

Investigating for this one I found out she’d done an album with John Paul Jones at one point. The cover is pretty great.

They must have had tons of fun doing that. I knew he was a big fan of hers in the 90s.

It’ll only be worth 1 point in a walrus though.

I never know proper Walrus etiquette. I want to post a couple I considered but rejected but not sure if that’s cool. I guess I can wait until after.

I don’t particularly care, but I think probably after is better with the perspective of the full reveal to add onto.

Jokes aside, I’m really not sure which entry is yours. You did win my category in the last grab bag though!

Don’t worry, you’ll have to beat me to the bottom.

Category host name: seities
Category: A song with a scream. To expand, in a lot of punk hardcore you might say the singer is screaming every word. So that counts. But also, one long or short scream in the song counts. I’m not judging based on the scream itself.
Musical tastes: I generally lean more towards things on the faster/heavier side within the following genres: Rock/Punk/Metal/EDM/Rap. Anything from 90’s onwards is probably going to have a better chance a high ranking.
Any other judging notes: If it’s overly familiar, there will be a penalty. Try and keep it under 8 minutes, and if I am liking a 3 minute song and an 8 minute song a comparable amount then I am going to rank the 3 minute song higher.

Some examples in case it helps:

Slint - Good Morning, Captain: https://youtu.be/J87vtrC_JBM?t=398 . The link should start you at about 6:38 of the song. The scream is central to a climactic end to the song.
Paint It Black - Greetings, Fellow Insomniacs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_meLg1UW9EI - Dude is pretty much screaming the whole song.
Tool - 4 degrees: https://youtu.be/8NGemR1cqZQ?t=213 - Clip should take you straight to 3:33 where Maynard belts out “Let meeeeeeeeeeeeeeee…in”.

Really, even if there is just a 3 second scream in the song somewhere that has an impact, its going to work for the category.

Well you lot really made this one tough for me. It took some work to get my ranking done, and as usual it may look totally different if I did it a week from now.

In 13th place - 1 point

365 days - The Mighty Mighty Bosstones

Despite the ranking, I admire this submission. I was not expecting anything from the ska genre. This was just a very strong field and this particular track didn’t do a lot for me and I don’t listen to much ska. I’d be completely happy to have this song turn up in a random playlist though.
