it’s a bit weird that nuclear disaster nightmares would stop the same year as chernobyl.
FWIW I remember chernobyl pretty distinctly but it didn’t really seem to have much effect on me, I guess it’s the difference between something happening accidentally vs. deliberately, plus the fact that at the time we weren’t exactly getting real time tik tok updates from the exclusion zone

i distinctly remember news of the challenger space shuttle accident. My kindergarden teacher warned us not to pick up any debris we may find on the ground. we were in a different hemisphere from florida, but you can never be too careful i guess. the state propaganda at the time must have been conflating Challenger and Star Wars and likely HIV into a single threat.

like what are we talking about here? They lob a single tactical nuke inside ukraine? that alone is already significantly likely to spiral into a full-scale war. Anything more than that is probably 99% ending in adios muchachos
Less than ten nukes to various targets in Europe, then Russians kill Putin and apologize before any retaliatory strikes can be launched. Some sort of scenario where some of Europe is hit but doesn’t lead to full-out Armageddon. Use your imagination.
