That’s me in the white circle, a couple days ago. Taken by friend from her hospital window. No visitors allowed, so…
That’s a pretty cool photo to be disappointed by, but I respect your desire for better!
I’m guessing that line in the top middle was a plane? And is that a lightning storm in the lower right?
Line in the top right was a shooting star. Bottom right was a thunderstorm, yep. Got luck with a well-timed flash of lightning to illuminate the cloud. Also, the really bright star amid the cypress limbs is Jupiter and a little to the left and down is Saturn.
Untouched as of now. I should have posted in this thread instead of the LC thread! This is a pretty popular San Diego hiking spot, and we were shocked no one else had this idea, at least not on Sunday night.
I miss San Diego. My brother lived there for a few year so I visited a few times. Loved it. Might be best weather on earth.
I remember seeing all those letters on the hills when we were camping in Utah. Is that a regional thing?
The stars reflecting in the water are really, really cool. You description of floating in space seems pretty accurate. How accessible is an area like that to the general public? Is navigation wading in that area a learned skill or is it hard to get lost? That is something I think I’d enjoy experiencing if/when I move to south Florida.
These types of geoglyphs are common in many places. They can be for airplanes, religious reasons or just markers.
Thanks. I just recall them really standing out in Utah - several communities along the highway south of SLC, for instance, had a big letter prominently displayed to face the highway.
These are the ones in my city.
Thanks. This spot in particular is very accessible and there’s virtually no chance you’d get lost. The bigger concern is that it’s somewhat dangerous. There are lots of venomous snakes and gators in the area, and theoretically bears and panthers (though they are reclusive in most circumstances). Nonetheless, this spot is super easy to get to if you can get past the unease of how spooky it is at night. The first hundred yards of the trail is a footpath that has brush Encroaching from all sides, so it’s super dark and it provides good cover for snakes and gators. You can see the trails of trampled brush leading off to the sides where gators have crossed the path, so you know they are there, lol. The first time I tried to go to this spot at night, I chickened out, and I’m probably more comfortable in this environment than most other people. Night time is a whole other world lol. One other precaution is there are a ton of mosquitoes.
Disclaimer out of the way, and on a serious note, I’d be happy to take you on a tour of this trail if you’re ever down here and we have good conditions, I’ll definitely go out at night with you to see if we can have a cool experience. Even in the day time, there is some cool stuff to see on this trail, there are a couple cypress domes that are a short distance off the trail where you can see some cool cypress trees and usually a decent sized gator or two.
Thanks for the info and invite. I’ve been pretty close to some big gators before (within 5 feet or so) and it is definitely unnerving. I can imagine it’s even more so at night when you can’t see them. I may take you up on the experience when I’m down there, but will continue to live vicariously through your photos until then.
Thanks again for sharing. This thread is one of my favorites on UP.
The U is above the University of Utah. There’s a Y above BYU. There are about 80 of these things in Utah. I assume they’re common anywhere there are hills and people.
It’s my pleasure. It’s nice knowing that other people get enjoyment out this stuff.
If you don’t mind saying, what part of south Florida are you moving to?
Right now anywhere from Miami up to Delray Beach or Naples to Ft Myers is on the table. Leaning towards Delray area. Hoping to move in early 2021 but COVID may push that back. If you have any recommendations of areas to look or avoid, I’m all ears.
This is great. I love the line the clouds make.
