Any chance this thread could be renamed? Something like “The murder of George Floyd” would work.
Asking because the “tragic death” phrase was used ironically/sarcastically on 2p2 in the “Tragic death of the Republican party” thread. That connotation carries over to this thread, at least in my mind.
I could be off base on this so I’m not gonna push hard on it but I thought I’d make a request.

That might be where it started but IIRC the old place had several threads named “the tragic death of…” that weren’t meant to be sarcastic or ironic.

IIRC the ‘Tragic Death of…’ meme started with the Trayvon Martin gigathread, not necessarily relevant if people read it mostly ironically now, but it’s def had sincere uses also. Not much hangs on it though, go ahead and change it if you like imo.

The original “tragic death” thread I believe was the tragic death of Trayvon Martin. It was used unironically for that and several other deaths. The tragic death of the Republican Party thread was created ironically years later.

I think right wingers are terrified of these protests. They’re in power and they can’t stop them. They could try to escalate it but they know if they do things will explode and every deplorable knows they’re no where near fit enough to handle what would follow.
I also think it’s the real reason they’re not defending the police officer or smearing George Floyd. They’re certainly depraved enough to do so. They’ve spent decades defending the most inhumane and indefensible acts so why not this?

I wasn’t sure whether the Trayvon title was sarcastic or not either, thought it might have been referring to right-wing rhetoric around the killing.
It was a murder. It was also a tragic death. With that said, I changed the title.

I’m pretty sure I was the one who titled it the Tragic Death of Trayvon Martin, and I was serious, and I banned people who popped into say there was nothing tragic about it.

News helicopters circling over my apartment now. Protests are marching through downtown. There is a 2nd amendment group dressed in camo carrying AR-15s. Reporter said that they are here to support peaceful protests, having a hard time believing that.
