Police Murder George Floyd Then Riot Nationwide (Links to Streams in OP)

Yeah I was having the same thought tonight. It’s even worse than that, though. Even if Biden wins and calls for calm and tries to bring the country together, the Trumpers who are out there with the flags, paintball guns, AR-15s, pipe bombs, etc aren’t going to listen to a guy they think is a corrupt, socialist, America-hating, yada yada yada insert Trumpian bullshlit here.

So even if Biden wins, it’s still going to be up to Trump to calm down his supporters, which I don’t see happening under any circumstances. Best case maybe he just shuts the fuck up and plays golf and grifts for the rest of his days, but I doubt it. Beyond him, who can stop it? George W. Bush? I doubt it, but I think right now maybe the best thing that could happen would be Obama and Dubya giving a joint speech calling for calm.

Biden needs to do the same and call on Trump to do the same, because that’s the best political move he can make.

But who is the second most influential person for Trumpers? It’s not Pence, that’s for sure. I don’t think it’s any of the formerly establishment politicians like Pompeo or Lindsey Graham. I doubt most of the Trumpers out there stoking violence could even name five Republican senators.

This is a cult of personality and fascism, so I think the people who are in the upper tier of influence are Don Jr, Hannity, Tucker Carlson, etc… So I don’t know how you speak to it and try to get some sort of peace.

Maybe it’s athletes, entertainers, etc who they like and admire? Real strong, tough, macho, apple pie and cheeseburger loving American celebrities? The Rock? JJ Watt? Toby Keith?

I really have no idea how we get this back under the rock it crawled out from under. Maybe the play is to just focus on what we can control: our own side.

If we sweep the election and enact meaningful reform, the protests will die down and there will be nothing to counter-protest. Maybe that’s the only way to find a peace?

Portland + Kenosha is like 5 square blocks out of 4 million square miles. It’s not total chaos out there.

you think there’s some fatigue setting in? there were pretty spontaneous widespread demonstrations in cities all over the world after Floyd. they all have the potential to be like Kenosha and Portland

To some degree, morally, this is war, and entering the field of battle in pretty clearly identifiable uniforms is kind of an agreement that you are going to fight.

Passion and Warfare… just not chaos

God mace isn’t even legal in Australia.

I lost it, but one of the twitter feeds had a picture of a street a couple blocks from the shooting at the time of the shooting and it was a bunch of people at cafes and stuff being as normal as people can be in the times of covid.

it’s just worrisome. the Rand Paul episode. protesters and counter-protesters, the cops and national guard in the periphery. shit can get bad. there’s a potential for a real active shooter-type situation similar to Vegas with many victims

especially with all the passions inflamed, people showing up solely to be belligerent and rage, while armed to the teeth

He was chased a block and half by like 20 people having done nothing but run and then shoots after he falls and people are on him. It can be both things - heroic by the people trying to get his gun - and self-defense.

Because he shot the first guy, but I know that, you know that, you know I know that and I know you know that. Should I repeat myself? Should we restate what we said a few posts ago?

Was that shooting in self-defense? Maybe.

Was he a threat at the time? On a rampage? Doesn’t look like it.

Did the second guy who got killed know that? Probably not.

For sure. Some of these protests are getting quite dangerous. It won’t be surprising if more people get shot.

Why are you defending him micro?

Looks like it needs to happen, the divisions are so deep and irreconcilable.

Some states need to secede from this basket case ASAP.

Well, my argument stems from an argument in another venue, but I’m just saying what I think is true and I don’t think it’s wrong to be honest and saying I don’t think he was on a rampage is not saying I think he’s a great guy.

They are related, but lots of things that happen between protesters and police have nothing to do with either antifa or right-wing vigilante groups.

I dunno the breakdown between state affairs and federal. but if eg CA becomes a fully autonomous state doesn’t it suggest a greater potential for change?

Can’t believe it’s so late. Between this, Nextdoor, and an email argument I’m in, I’ve probably never been more internet-argument-agitated.

Good night and have a pleasant tomorrow.

There’s the ever present threat of the US pres sending in the national guard or god knows what that must hang heavily over politicians.

Ok, thanks for filling me in.

If you’re not a secessionist how do you see this ever being resolved?

I mean one side with most of the guns has Heritage as part of their mantra ffs, and they see it as part of their identity.

If you look at other parts of the world with similar identity divides the two sides never reconcile, which is why @Rivaldo cited the Balkans.
