‘No Way To Prevent This,’ Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens - Gun Violence in America

Who says that being atheist automatically makes one believe that life is meaningless?

I’m an atheist and have great meanings in my life.

Nozetradamus, fuck off. Lol being more worried about guns in law abiding citizen’s hands than cops who shoot black people in the back. Keep licking their boots you Trump law and order cop lover

Me too, but it’s not like there’s inherent meaning.¹ If you suddenly take away regular people’s religion opiate, not everyone will be able to find meaning, especially if the majority of their time is spent working bullshit jobs and struggling to pay bills. Even more true for people going through difficult events like the loss of a child etc. There’s no “God’s mysterious plan” anymore or, “She went to a better place.” Nope, just the universe giving zero shits about you or anything.

¹ None that we know about, anyway. Personally I leave open the possibility that there is a meaning to it all, and I try to view the insignificance of this planet in a humbling and awe-inspiring way rather than a “fuck it” kind of way.

Was away this weekend. At some point I saw some news alert that said something like “West Texas shooter was on a downward spiral”.

I figured that this was a story about new information regarding the El Paso shooting a few weeks ago. It wasn’t until this morning that I learned that there was a different mass shooting in Texas in August 2019.

…which is why I think it’s useful that a lot of people, even if they abandon organized religion, just stick to casual “yup pretty sure there’s a God” spiritualism since it can work for them but generally doesn’t come with all the baggage. If there were a way you could somehow unequivocally prove the absence of a higher power to everyone, it’d be like if Morpheus just gave everybody the damn red pill at once. Wouldn’t be a pretty sight.

I think this to be quite condescending. "Sure. I, a smart and educated person, can find meaning in life without religion. The unwashed masses on the other hand… ".

Obviously I am exaggerating what you said a tiny bit but I hope you get my point. We don’t have to speculate and can instead simply look at countries where religiosity is on the way out. They are doing quite fine.

I don’t agree it’s strictly condescending to say that some people won’t find meaning. It seems like it’d be a statistical certainty, given the size of the sample in question.

Most of the people ive met with nihilistic angst are educated atheists.

Some people react better to having their world view challenged or changed than others. If you were brought up in the milieu of god with the big G it can be challenging to be without it underpinning everything. See the Natural Rights crap at the base of an-cap.

That Christian right douchebag in the video suzzer posted is saying that. Explicitly.

It reminds me of when they say that if we don’t follow the Biblical definition of marriage everybody will start marrying their dogs and toasters.

They’re just narrow minded idiots using religion to control people and then claim that we have freedom. Freedom to do what THEY want us to do and think is acceptable.

Atheists may think religious folks are foolish for their beliefs and think praying or whatever is ridiculous but they’re not passing laws restricting them from doing do. Whereas the other side… yeah about that.

Just a world class post of on-point assumptions right here.

You’re insistence on painting every member of this community as pro “cops shooting black people” is getting tiring, to say the least. I’d guess every single person here (at least those that came from the original site) are for the demilitarization of the police and are outraged by the repeated killing of minorities, they just smartly haven’t tied those issues to overall gun control. All your method does is ensure that nothing ever gets accomplished on either front.

It’s condescending because you’re basically saying they can’t handle the truth. We can rip their politics. We can rip their racism. We can even rip their favorite sports teams, but for some reason, we don’t dare rip their deluded fantasies about an invisible god or that there’s no life after death? Why? It’s because there’s this unspoken rule that religion is off limits. Bullshit. Not for me. If someone tells me they believe in invisible gods and magic kingdoms when they die, I’m going to tell them that they’re a gullible fuck. I think it’s a huge problem that we can’t address religious bullshit and call it out for what it is. An ancient ridiculous fairy tale

I don’t have a method. I don’t want to see another mass shooting either. I’m fine with getting rid of guns, but I’ve been told over and over again that my reasons are absurd. I still don’t agree. If cops have them in abundance than I want them. It’s as simple as that

Some issues I’ve recently been thinking about that might change my mind…

It is much easier to commit mass murder or suicide with a gun than any other thing. If you’re suicidal, it’s much easier to grab a gun and get it over with than getting into your car, driving to a building, riding the elevator to the 34th floor, and finding a ledge to jump off of

I’m also starting to see how it’s much easier to commit mass murder with an assault rifle, than say, a car, or other means. The psycho probably feels safer and can at least die on his own terms if he doesn’t want to be caught.

So hell yeah. Let’s get rid of guns. But cops shoot about 1000 people a year too in the USA. I view that as part of our gun problem, which no one else here seems to agree with. Granted, not all of them are innocents, but even if just a small fraction are, or didn’t deserve to be shot, then it’s a problem in my opinion

That’s pretty bad reading comprehension of Wookie’s post.
