‘No Way To Prevent This,’ Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens - Gun Violence in America

Disagree! I hate that organized religion has playing a huge part in totally destroying the idea of life having meaning for so many people (not saying that’s the case for you).

This should definitely be a thread.

Yeah, it’s not me. I’ve never really been subjected to organized religion - especially not as a child.

I’m of the Kierkegaardian (I think that’s the right guy) mindset that it’s best to just pretend there’s meaning. He chose to be all Christian, conscious that it was a choice more than a belief.

I’m not sure one would need to be subjected to organized religion for it to play a part in undermining the idea that life has meaning. Organized religions are the biggest “meaning of life” brands and when people see that they’re mostly full of crap (which can either be realized via experience or observation) it contributes to the idea that meaning itself is a load of crap.

The best response imo to 2A purists is to bring up submachine guns. I still can’t get one to tell me why it’s ok that submachine guns are highly regulated and mostly illegal - but doing something similar with high capacity magazines and assault rifles is the road to tyranny.

Can’t remember too many mass shootings with a fully automatic Uzi lately. Seems like the NFA is doing its job.

All they ever do is quibble about the definition of “illegal” and “fully automatic” of course.

Is banning bump stocks also a road to tyranny? Trump was for that for a couple minutes there.

+1 that a thread about the pros/cons of atheism’s rise would be interesting.

Idk where I stand on that. Now that atheism isn’t a radical idea, many more avg joes can be atheist. So the question is, how will the avg joe deal with the meaninglessness of life and more importantly, how will they behave with the newfound knowledge that “morality” is only a figment of human imagination? Is this species ready for atheism, or will atheism only accelerate our descent into dystopia? Is atheism a net positive for a species as dumb as ours?

I’m cautiously optimistic and the rise of atheism is inevitable regardless.

RGT part 2…

I read earlier that the latest shooter had been shooting animals from some set up on his roof for months and threatened his neighbor with a rifle just recently. The police didn’t show up because their address didn’t show up on GPS.

I also read that he failed a background check that was for a job I think, not any gun purchases.

Grunching a bit but fuck you can be an atheist and still think your life is valuable to yourself and others for a lot of reasons. What the fuck.

Well of course.

That was what I was commenting on. I might have made some bad assumptions on what that meant but I don’t think so.

Everyone’s different. I’ve spent enough time in my own head to know how it works, but I know other people are different. There have been times in my life that I have thought that people like me shouldn’t be allowed to own guns, but that doesn’t mean I translate that to everyone and think that no one should be allowed to own guns.

Nashville school bans “Harry Potter” series, citing risk of “conjuring evil spirits”

Reehil explains in the email that he has consulted several exorcists in the U.S. and Rome, and it was recommended that the school remove the books, the Tennessean reports.

“These books present magic as both good and evil, which is not true, but in fact a clever deception,” Rev. Reehil said of the seven-part “Harry Potter” book series. “The curses and spells used in the books are actual curses and spells; which when read by a human being risk conjuring evil spirits into the presence of the person reading the text,” the email continues.

People dabble in ideas. I know I do.

From detailed systems that provide inspiration and meaning - to a more undefined, unstructured agnosticism - there’s a fluidity to belief.

It’s like those tatted-up weirdos that ran drugs and engaged in all sorts of depravity, that we now find speaking as authority to assemblies of school children.

Or Western-educated young Muslims that aren’t fulfilled, and somehow end up radicalized Jihadi.

People run the gamut of experience within one, individual life. It’s tough to think we’re gonna get some homogeneity of life-arc. It’ll remain total chaos.

Tiger Woods is in the house at the US Tennis Open, watching Rafa Nadal and Marin Čilić lol and fist-pumping after great points.

chaos! it’s all around you
