We don’t need to go down a rabbit hole here of reductionism. The twist is obviously a great part of the book. Nobody has ever once said it’s a first.
And in the context of a movie, I genuinely don’t think the word “twist” would have necessarily even come to mind for me to describe that thing if the discourse hadn’t been so weirdly adamant that a twist had been insanely spoiled or whatever. Not that spoilers really matter, but boy does this one REALLY not matter in this context.
I mean, it does meet the definition of “twist,” but in the sort of way where you encounter 25+ twists a year if you’re watching very many movies.
I would ask would you recommend the book and say “oh just wait till X happens! It’s great”. I doubt it and that is all the people who question the spoiler in the trailer are saying.
Fair I have not seen the movie but basically everyone, including the author, considered it a twist in the book.
You need to acknowledge you are coming from already knowing it.

I had no idea either. None. And the reaction wasn’t an eye-opening, “Oh, shit!” It was a nodding, “Oh, okay.”
And then I spent a good chunk of the movie going, “I think that was the big twist…? I guess.” And then later the thing happens where they show the back story where he was sent on the mission against his will, and it left me walking out of the theater questioning if maybe that was what people were talking about. But apparently not.
Ok. The twist didn’t work on you. No worries.
Not a movie, but Star Trek The Savage Curtain (1969). Also, The Devil in the Dark (1967) had silicon based life.
Well it was fine for what it was as a garden-variety tone redirection in a movie, but in terms of pulling the rug out from under me, no. I’m pretty sure it won’t do that for most people who go into this movie blind and with no book background.
Which is not even a particularly bad thing. If a movie lives and dies with its twist, it was almost certainly a nothing movie anyway.

Wtf is wrong with you? Use spoiler tags. We are literally discussing whether these details change the experience of the movie.
Idk if these things count as twists. But when reading the book, the slow discovery of why the guy is in space at all is part of the experience. And then there are the other fun surprises (all spoiled by the trailer).

yeah that’s the issue
like, I’m not one that thinks movie adaptations should be slavish reproductions of the books (in fact, I kinda hate it), but in this case the author clearly made a very conscious decision about this plot point in the book and the movie made a different decision, which has people feeling feels. it’s not a spoiler anymore if it’s prominently featured in the trailer IMO.
I haven’t read the book and haven’t seen the movie yet so I really don’t have an opinion on whether this particular decision was good or not, but whoever made it almost certainly did it knowing that the book did the opposite.

The Devil in the Dark, yes. The Horta. I think it was one of Shatner’s favorite episodes.
