It’s sublime. You really need to see it.
A Place in the Sun (1951)
Elizabeth Taylor looks like this throughout the movie. That’s the review.
Okay, slightly more: I absolutely loved the first half of this movie. The major inflection point in the second half of the movie was…ambitious, but not in a way that I ended up liking. Major spoiler if you care: Montgomery Clift falls in love with Liz Taylor and then promptly finds that he has just knocked up his girlfriend shortly before he properly meets Taylor at a party. And the girlfriend is unable to get an abortion, so she starts demanding he marry her. And his response is to stall and then eventually to start warming up to the idea of maybe murdering her. And then he pursues that plan. And man, I like dark shit in movies and I approve in theory of going that hard, but it was such a brutal tonal shift that it kind of pushed me past my bleakness limit. So that leveled off my enthusiasm for it. It’s still a really well-executed movie at all points. I just stopped being able to love it as much midway through.
It’s on Hoopla if you’ve got it.
3.5/5
You made up “hoopla” didn’t you
Just wait until you find out about Fawesome.
Watched Eddington. Not what I was expecting from the previews and commercials I saw. I don’t really even know what was going on in the second half of the movie.
Prey (2022)
A Predator movie set in the 18th century Great Plains among the Comanche. This had like 5% chance of being even ok. Instead it’s fucking awesome. Incredibly accurate depiction of hunter gatherer Comanche culture, French fur trade and somehow all mixed into a kick ass predator movie.
The ending is just amazing.
Grade: A
How the fuck is this so good!
Yeah it’s very good. Badlands is good too (although I didn’t like it quite as much).
I liked badlands a lot. Agree prey is better.
Co-sign. Prey was awesome (and fun). Badlands was what I would call “fun”.
Think I will re-visit Prey soon.
How could it possibly be bad? You can’t mess up a premise that strong.
Yeah Prey was great. I’m flabbergasted you skipped it this long and saw Trachtenbergs next Predator installment before getting to this one
These are not normally my kind of movie. ![]()
(literal coolest movie premise ever)
Clovis: “This is good, actually.”
When I heard the premise I thought it sounded terrible. lol.
Is Predator (1987) a better movie if you take out the opening shot of the spaceship?
It is significantly better this way. It would be better for the audience to feel like the characters, not knowing what’s going on.
I am pretty sure I have never seen the original! Or any other one except the new Trachtenberg ones.
I see prey is on Hulu, I enjoyed badlands so will check it out.
