Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 3)

Two of the later movies are ranked lower on Rotten Tomatoes. On the other hand, Bumblebee is at 91%.

Oh, I just remembered: as post-2000 sports movies go, Cinderella Man is better than most of that list.

When Evil Lurks (2023) is an Argentinian supernatural horror film.

When the residents of a small rural town discover that a demon is about to be born among them, they desperately try to escape, but it may be too late.

The movie is universally acclaimed. Fucked up. Intense. Unsettling. Violent.

But for me, it made me think of the VHS anthology series. A lot of those short films are fantastic. Even the ones that are just okay often have great premises and are just short enough not to overstay their welcome.

That’s what When Evil Lurks felt like for me. A feature film that should have been 12 minutes at most. If you’ve seen one demonic possession movie, you’ve kinda seen them all.

But if that’s your thing, you’ll probably love this.

I quite enjoyed Wake Up Dead Man. Josh O’Connor gives a great performance, and Craig is good as always. This will probably disappoint you if you’re expectations are prime Hitchcock and delight you if your expectations are Masterpiece Mystery.

This was my first time going to Alamo Drafthouse, and I gotta say it was kind of nice.

@LKJ Have you seen The Petrified Forest? I was just reminded of this movie (really liked it when I worked on it though it was a million years ago). It is generally credited as the role that turned Bogart into a movie star. Bogart even said it was the movie that made people realize he could act. It also had a young Bette Davis and Leslie Howard in it. It should be well worth a watch if you haven’t seen it.

I haven’t yet. It’s been in the watchlist. I think The Roaring Twenties is the earliest Bogart I’ve seen so far.

Easy Riders, Ranging Bulls (2003)

I’ve been on a film history binge so watched this again. It is a pretty great oral history of the 70s told by many of the main players before so many died.

Highly worth your time.

That’s a funny tweet but not totally fair. She absolutely crushed in The Fallout which is a criminally under seen movie.

That’s what happens to almost all film nerds in the business. They either fail or end up on stuff that’s far beneath their knowledge and theoretical ability. It’s very rare to see a Tarantino or Sam Esmail make it (Sam was 38 when Mr. Robot was sold but he had major personality defects that held him back). Now be a sociology major who just likes movies and the world is yours.

Man, who cares? She has good taste in movies but also she likes money, I see no contradictions. Secure the bag first and then you can make A24 movies.

Jenna can do no wrong. Whatever choices she makes are fine. She’s elevated everything I’ve ever seen her in. Her earnest sarcasm presents probably better than any actor in movie history that I can think of.

Sunrise also isn’t that deep of a cut. I haven’t gotten to it yet, but I’m guessing it’s in at least the top 10-15 most prominent silent films. I look forward to watching it someday.

The Ortegassance will soon be upon us!

Has she expressed any interest in directing?

Yes. She has been working on a script for ten years.

A 14 year old’s script probably needs a lot of rewrites. No idea how old she is now.

Everyone needs a long game.
