This is a fantastic neo Western. It is very deliberately paced. Action scenes are intense but infrequent. If the Assassination of Jesse James kept you engaged, youâll for sure enjoy this one.
Thandiwe Newton is the star. Itâs worth seeing for her alone. The theme is racism, except in a good movie, so itâs nice to see her get a second crack at it and succeed.

Found this list interesting because Lee has a much bigger filmography than I imagined. Quite the range in critic ratings, too. How did 25th Hour only end up in the middle of the pack?
Spike would agree with you. He did an interview with The Big Picture podcast that posted in the past week or two, and quickly named 25th Hour as the one from his filmography that deserves more love and that he still hopes will age into greater appreciation.
I have a lot of Spike blind spots, but even from what I know, this list mostly reveals the limitations of Metacritic to me. Malcolm X not being top 10 is goofy (the notion that itâs worse than BlacKkKlansman and bearing the same score as Highest 2 Lowest is part of the goofiness), but I understand that itâs probably because it felt radical in the moment of release. Metacritic is gauging immediate reactions of the time, which is useful context as a historical prism but has real limitations when just trying to toss it mechanically into a ranking over 30 years later.

The list lost me when Malcolm X was rated 16th. Maybe Iâll get back to it later.
BlacKkKlansman not that great and kind of offensive, but the real overrated film was Da Five Bloods which was quite bad and actually amateurish. Lots of great films on the back half of this list though.
Da 5 Bloods over Malcolm X is a choice.
Itâs explicitly not a choice though. Itâs mindlessly plugging in an archived number without a thought.

Oh, I see that now. I refuse to believe that if you asked critics âwhich is better: Malcolm X or Da 5 Bloodsâ you wouldnât get overwhelming support for the former.

Watched Sense and Sensibility from 1995 last night. An absolute murderers row of a cast in a much funnier movie than I was expecting. Im not sure how much was Leeâs directing and how much was Austenâs writing, but there are some scenes that play out almost like a 1960s sitcom. It was incredibly interesting to see. She seems to have been an incredibly unique comedic talent for that time period.
No notes, other than to say that every time I see Kate Winslet in something I havent seen her in, im reminded of how amazing she is as an actor. Only her second film role, and she nails every scene playing next to the godly Emma Thompson who is 17 years older than her and who similarly nailed every scene.

All true. This is a banger with a banger cast. I think this is the rare Jane Austen movie that will appeal to non fans.
If you have any familiarity with her other works, especially Pride & Prejudice, you would love Lost in Austen. It is a queer movie! But I wonât spoil how. Lots of fun twists on the story.

Finished Highest to Lowest, and I think itâs just a mess. The first episode of HBOâs Task was more cinematic than all but one or two scenes in this movie.
