One of the best films of the year but unrelentingly bleak. Add one to my “ I’m never watching that film again “ list.

I still have never seen it despite doing work for it. About 14 years ago Warners wanted to do a big bonus disc for the 10th anniversary. Frank had been really desirous of doing something for it for years because it never got a ‘real’ DVD when it was released, even though most DVDs were lame in 2001 anyway. In 2011, they granted his wish but no one was able to get hold of him to actually participate and the deadline passed. Typical really.

The Sound of Music (1965)
Back in theaters for today and I believe up through Wednesday of the coming week. This movie is such an absolute joy bomb. Julie Andrews is a treasure. Amusing to me that Christopher Plummer hated this movie, because it doesn’t come through in the performance.
I remember when I first watched it, I fired it up while in a bad mood about something or other, and did so with the fear that I might be sabotaging the experience by not entering it with the right mindset. The movie is so good that it overpowered whatever I was irritated about that day (I honestly have no recollection of what that even was anymore), so that particularly impressed me. Rewatch confirmed what a banger it is. (Rewatch also reminded me that the would-be Ted Lasso finale really did do that “So Long, Farewell” scene that might just be the low point of all television. I hadn’t thought of that in a minute.)
It’s as cheesy as musicals get, so I know some won’t like it, but I think it’s one of the GOATs in that genre. Hope people capitalize on their chance to see it on the big screen and in its new 4K restoration.
