Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 3)

Greenland is SO MUCH FUN. I’ve seen it multiple times. Great disaster movie.

But the director commentary was so terrible I turned the movie off. At one point he talks about vaccines as a reason not to trust the government???

Guess I’ll be watching Sinners then.

Should have done that before Ronin.

wtf is this Oscar bait about ping pong and Kevin O’Leary

I’m mostly numb to these now but this one is pretty mind blowing. To think someone in their 50s in 1981 had the same connection to 1936 (Jesse Owens, the rise of Hitler) that I have to 1981 (Donkey Kong, Reagan).

At its core, the core is about the core

Sir, Ronin was released in the 90s.

Don’t forget the end credits scene!

It’s apparently going to be on rewatchables very soon so you better hurry up.

That’s why I posted that.

I should have known

Gladiator II missed a golden opportunity to get the name in there.

What thread is the Clovis/risky movie bet in? A podcast I watch has been showing clips of war of the worlds today and I want to offer it up for consideration.

It’s the Supreme Court thread.

I win if there is no cert.

I don’t think I can do that to someone tho. I mean what I’d really want to do is get Clovis to watch something we all know is great but that he refuses to watch.

You’re almost certainly describing something not great.

No one here knows it’s great, but I think The Flash is an excellent candidate for this.

Cloud (2025)

I really, really liked the first half of this and felt the film had greatness in its grasp. And then the second half devolved into a complete mess for a significant stretch, enough of a mess that I started thinking of excuses like, “well, it’s not taking as bad of a nosedive as Heretic did at least…”

Still a lot to like - it’s beautifully shot, and even the mess is pretty engaging - but as opposed to some movies where I feel that I failed to fully keep up, I came away largely feeling like the filmmaker was spamming things and not pulling together any sort of coherent idea or vision.

3 or 3.5. It’s tough to rate these movies that provide wildly uneven experiences.

Bill Simmons had spike Lee on his podcast.

This was apparently an exchange about Covid.
