I was hoping for the best but thought the trailer looked meh
Man that sucks, friend and I went to see the brutalist the other night, 20 mins after intermission they have an issue, get it back on track in about 10 mins, watch another 20, breaks again, come out and say the file is corrupted canāt be fixed.
So was thinking I would just go to one and go 2 hours or so late, but havenāt had the chance and the showtimes are mostly not at night now so Iām probably catching the last hour on streaming

That oneās rough too. At least it sounds like you must have enjoyed what you saw. If it happened during a movie I was hating then my reaction would be much closer to Costanza finding out his fiancĆ©e died.

I decided to follow up The Hunt with Another Round, which @superuberbob characterized as a comedy. Another good movie with another excellent Mads performance, but man does this not fit my particular definition of comedy. Are the Danes ok? Do they have happiness in their lives?

It is a really good movie. I think there were talks of an English-language remake coming out in the future.
As for it being funny, I agree. Cold places in Europe have a dark sense of humor. In Eastern Europe, itās borderline fatalistic.
I visited Denmark once and while itās a beautiful country, I did find Danes to be pretty standoffish. Americans seems to value extraversion and connection while Danes are a bit more isolated.

I agree that Another Round is much more drama than comedy. I liked it, but not near as much as The Hunt.
As long as youāre looking in on Danish cinema starring Mads Mikkelsen, I thought The Promised Land was quite good. I believe Krayz vouched for it ITT too. Itās on Hulu. (Itās not lighthearted at all either, but itās less dark than what youāve been watching IMO.)

The Age of Innocence (1993)
Iāve been aware of this one since it was new - I can remember seeing TV spots advertising it for theaters - but I did sort of forget about it and sleep on it for a long time. Glad I can now say that in the past tense, because this was great. Scorsese is always masterful with the camera, but he did a ton here to make a really visually beautiful period piece outside of his usual genres; the camera is constantly moving in interesting ways, basically only ever stopping if heās got a really gorgeous shot to linger on.
This is basically a gender-flipped deep dive on the Rose story from Titanic, Daniel Day-Lewis playing in a similar role to Rose. The comparison isnāt perfect - his fiancĆ©e (Winona Ryder) is much more winsome than the Billy Zane Titanic character - but the themes are still strongly present.
It should have really come as no surprise that Marty could thrive in this sort of subgenre as well, but it nonetheless pleasantly surprised me.

I enjoyed the book when I read it in high school, but I didnāt know it was later made into a movie.
Does DDL chew on the scenery, like usual?
Itās way less hammy (in this limited instance, not a slight) than DDL would be starting at maybe Gangs of New York. Heās an outwardly passionate character, but a lot of the acting is internalized emotions as well. I like the performance quite a bit, but DDL circa 1993 was much closer to the traditional very handsome leading man than the characters he would begin to play later starting (I think) at Gangs of New York. Hereās the difference of eight years.

Speaking of hammy, TWBB felt like a pig roast. I was definitely in the No Country for Old Men camp.

Yeah maybe, though I love that performance too. I guess at this point that I just trust DDL to find the pitch thatās perfect for the movie and employ it accordingly. I have a lot more respect for DDL going big than Pacino going big (though I do love loud Pacino at times too).

Method is an excuse to be a douche but also sometimes makes some amazing performances.

DDL seems to be the one method actor where I havenāt heard stories about him being a huge douchebag to work with (obviously possible Iāve missed anecdotes to the contrary). Doesnāt seem like he has a Jeremy Strong reputation.

I donāt think strong is a douche. Only bad thing Iāve heard is people saying he takes it too far. Leto is an example of someone who uses method just to be na asshole.

To be clear, I donāt know whether heās a douche or not. That may not be a fair descriptor. From hearing him interviewed he does seem incredibly self-serious and relatively humorless, and I wouldnāt want to have a beer with him, but I donāt necessarily get the sense that heās a bad guy.
