Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 2)

Not at all similar except it’s also hard science fiction.

Awesome. Can’t wait to read it. Hopefully a copy becomes available before the movie comes out lol

Incredible. I assumed they dishonestly cherry-picked the rare real bad reviews.

lol Did they think no one would notice the quotes were made up?

ETA: One theory is that someone used chatgpt to get the quotes and no one bothered to check if the quotes were real.

AMC’s Nashville hot popcorn is good.

Cuckoo

7/10

I was looking at reviews for this movie and this perfectly summed up how I felt

Cuckoo is a movie that is clearly trying to attempt something different and creative, and I think for the most part the film succeeds in terms of genre filmmaking. There certainly are some rather interesting horror set pieces that get your heart rate up and gets under your skin. The only problem is that while these set pieces are well done, unfortunately the story and character development is not as tightly executed and the second half of the movie falls flat because of it. There’s a severe lack of tension in the third act of the movie because it’s not clear what the motivations of any of the characters are, it’s quite confusing and the film doesn’t flesh any of these ideas out. It’s frustrating because Cuckoo certainly isn’t a bad film, there are some solid performances, impressive visuals and there is a clear and distinct voice behind the camera, but it’s missing ingredient is lost somewhere in the plot and subtext work.

A shout out to Hunter Schafer who does great through the whole movie.

Good article. I recently rewatched The Thomas Crown Affair too. Still holds up.

I clicked in and got far enough to see that the writer was saying good things about Runaway Bride.

Strange Darling

5/10

If Cuckoo had style over story, this is one would be if you attempted both and failed at both.

Blink Twice

I’d give it an 8. It’s well made and it’s interesting.

strange darling has really good reviews, surprised you have it so low

There’s been a serious drought of theater offerings that appeal to me lately. Probably doesn’t help that the last time I dragged my ass to the theater for a new release was for that fucking Deadpool movie. I was very glad to see my local theater populate showings of Sing Sing and Didi starting this weekend. Looking forward to seeing Sing Sing tonight. Sounds like it’s probably going to be a significant player at the next Oscars.

didi has good reviews too

Yep, both movies have looked appealing and I’ve been impatiently waiting for them to come here as they’ve opened up elsewhere. Planning to see Didi before long too. Would very happily welcome some nice splashes into the 2024 year in film since the slate has been a lot thinner than last year.
