Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 2)

Exotica (1994)

The rare adult film about how sex, grief, and personal relationships intersect. From the 90s trend of ensemble connected plots that turn back on themselves this is one of the best examples. Sexy at times and heartbreaking at others.

When you started the description as a “rare adult film” I thought you were talking about a porno. Now I’m still not sure you aren’t.

Set partly in a strip club but actually has only minor nudity and zero actual sex.

This is a good doc!! They talk about a ton of other produced and unproduced comic book movies you can probably find on Tubi.

1980s Daredevil and Thor from Incredible Hulk movies.

Ha I just watched this one last month and loved it, great 90s vibes.

Also a fun thing about it was realizing that all these semi-famous actors I’d seen in multiple US productions are actually Canadian.
One of them is Mia Kirshner, I had a huge crush on her ~20 years ago, and always wondered why she didn’t become a bigger star.

I watched “Get Out” for the only the second time yesterday. This is a movie that really rewards a repeat viewing. I also think the first scene is really special, working both as a nice piece of suspense and an inversion of the “white guy scared to be in the hood” trope.

it’s worth watching Atom Egoyan’s other films too. Sweet Hereafter is a soul crushing masterpiece.

Based on what I saw from 24 and ( especially) The L Word, I think that not being a good actress might have had something to do with it.

Would highly recommend a third viewing with the commentary by Jordan Peele :popcorn::popcorn:

Seen his other features?? My second best fave of his short media ouvre is the behind the scenes incident during the production of Family Matters.

mk1

(You’re probably right, but I doubt I’ll ever be able to see it !)

Watched The Player (1992), and can’t believe I only became aware of this movie’s existence within the past couple of weeks. Has to have just been a weird blind spot on my end. Great stuff; definitely enjoyed the Tim Robbins performance, the story had me hooked, this to me was a much stronger effort than Gosford Park within the Altman catalog. Was also happy to discover that this unlocks a Rewatchables episode for me. Probably an 8/10 movie.

Love The Player – total rewatchable move, holds up every time, especially the big surprise in the movie within the movie. I lost it the first time.

Can any of you cinephiles help me find where to watch Kotei No Sora (2021)? Is it streaming literally anywhere?

I’ve seen his other movies. I really liked Us. Nope was a little different.

It’s cool that he did a commentary. It seems like streaming is really killing those off.

That doesn’t seem like a major factor in becoming a star.

She was so bad on The L Word that almost the entire fan base celebrated when her character died. You don’t have to be Meryl Streep, but you’ve got to be better than that.

Fair enough. I tend to support the ctr position myself.

I feel kinda mad that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is stuck in a bad zombie fish franchise. Yes, we got him in the Watchmen limited series, but I am sick thinking of what could have been if he were the next big bad for the MCU.

I thought Aquaman was actually pretty enjoyable and don’t really see how being a Marvel villain would be any better based on how lackluster Marvel films have been lately. Rotten Tomatoes seems to be pretty favorable overall as well towards Aquaman.

Besides, he was already fantastic in the HIGHLY underrated Candyman reboot/sequel which just didn’t get enough praise.

Edit: Candyman is streaming on Prime if anyone hasn’t seen it and would like to check it out
