Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 2)

Aww wanted to watch Hard Miles but apparently it only played a week in the theaters near me.

I donā€™t think that is some official poster. Itā€™s just some crap whatever films to films is mocked up.

This movie is getting great reviews. I canā€™t wait. We need more steamy sexy movies.

Eyebooger and I were discussing best films of last 20 years.

My top ten since 2004 would look something like this, in roughly this order.

Before Sunset

The Tree of Life

No Country for Old Men

The Act of Killing

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

The Social Network

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

Stories We Tell

Arrival

4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days

Unfortunately canā€™t comment too much on this list, as Iā€™ve only seen 2/10.

NCFOM was very good, but wonā€™t make my list (and it should not have won BP against TWBB, which probably will make my list).

I did not like Arrival at all.

You were early on the bandwagon of last year being a great year for movies and you did not disappoint. Wouldnā€™t be surprised if one or two of those make my list.

Why didnā€™t you like Arrival?

Hard to say but my top 10 over that period probably includes
LaLa Land
Parasite
Inglorious Basterds
There Will Be Blood

Those would make my top 20 I think

The reveal of language as time perception just did not connect with me at all.

Also, the protagonist deciding to have a child that she knows will die as a teen? Thatā€™s just awful.

I was more disappointed than anything. I was really into it in the first half.

Bzzt. Over 20 years old, your #11 graduates to the top 10.

Give me:
There Will Be Blood
No Country for Old Men
Oppenheimer
Killers of the Flower Moon
La La Land
Lady Bird
Whiplash
The Social Network
Before Sunset
Michael Clayton

Narrow misses: Zodiac, Past Lives, Tar

I think what most appealed to me about the movie was the spectacle on a smallish budget. Villenueve was probably well on his way to being a star before that movie, but it really proved it was going to happen. It was one of the best ā€˜give me money and see what I can doā€™ pitches Iā€™ve ever seen. Itā€™s been a long time since Iā€™ve seen it, so I canā€™t remember the nuances of the plot. It was def one of my faves of that year, I remember at least that much.

Iā€™m not promising this is a perfect list. Itā€™s front-loaded with the last 10 years, because Iā€™ve seen many more movies from that era.

Alphabetical order because I donā€™t want to rank them:
Children of Men
Judas and the Black Messiah
The Lives of Others
Panā€™s Labyrinth
Parasite
Past Lives
Roma
Room
Spotlight
There Will Be Blood

Very hard cuts (next 10):
Argentina, 1985
Ex Machina
The Father
La La Land
Marriage Story
Nightcrawler
One Night In Miami
Poor Things
Promising Young Woman
Sound of Metal

Did none of yā€™all see Moonlight? Dam.

Seen 9/13 of these.

Would give enthusiastic thumbs up to all of them except Tar, which I feel deserves a rewatch, but it did not connect with me at all the first time.

Saw it. It was fine. Itā€™s been since it was new since I saw it, but it didnā€™t make much of an impression on me on that first go. I do intend to give it a rewatch sometime given how strongly many people I respect feel about it.

Oh yeah, Spotlight was really good

If I had a 10 beyond my next 10, itā€™s very likely there.

Iā€™m not removing it for that technically!

I was so happy that the goddamn Revenant did not win BP that year.

Michael Clayton and past lives would be in my top 20

Good grief, was The Revenant the other favorite that year? That was a bottom two film in that field.
