Saw both of these in recent years.
Absolutely loved Last picture show.
Nashville I appreciate the craft but I had trouble connecting with it at the time, as it was too “fully negative” (in terms of characters) for me. I still loved a lot of it though (the Keith Carradine “I’m easy” concert scene especially…doesn’t hurt that it’s the only good music in the movie). I think I’ll like it better on rewatch some day.
Rewatched Total recall recently. My memory of it was as the decent but least interesting of the 90s Verhoeven movies, but I’m not sure that’s true, in any case it is so much fun, had a blast the whole time. There’s a scene in there where Arnold watches a tape of his former self and realizes he’s very different from that guy, obviously made me think of Severance and realize (yet again) how much better the 90s action thriller genre is compared to current prestige TV.
This made me feel like I’ll always like 90s (my teenage years) media better than everything else, so I tested that theory by watching True Lies and wow did that not hold up at all. The whole humor tone feels so dated and borderline creepy, did not enjoy the sidekick banter etc at all. I appreciated some of it though, the last act when Arnold goes into the jet was fun in its absurdity.
(Also this was hurt by me having watched too many Mission Impossible movies bc when it starts with Arnold as an undercover spy at some party, I automatically thought “he’s too tall…and doesn’t run in the correct way…”)
