That would be news to odds site that have her 4th. Ariana is the 2nd favorite, albeit quite distant. I donāt really want her to win either, but Iāll take it if it means Emilia Perez goes 0 for 13.

Yeah I donāt know, maybe Iām just seeing sporadic overreactions to the late surge of Conclave momentum.
I think Saldana did a fine job and Iām okay with her winning the Oscar, though if I had the deciding vote Iād give it to Monica Barbaro.
Anyone planning to see September 5 should just watch this instead. Narrated by Michael Douglas.
I consider it one of the best āticking clockā documentaries Iāve ever watched.

Disclaimer that I find September 5 to be a very forgettable movie and have no significant disagreement with your overall review of it, but: the John Magaro character certainly did a lot of self-reflecting, didnāt he? And he was the nominally the lead.
IDK, I guess a little bit. But he was still presented as āthe heroā and that bothered me quite a bit.
By all means correct me if Iām misremembering since youāve seen it more recently than me, but I guess I saw the movie portraying him as someone doing his best in a circumstance he was in over his head for, and he was pretty hard on himself and was getting pep talks from Peter Sarsgaard to keep on going. I guess I didnāt see the movie as unaware of the failings.
Basically my take on the movie was that it was non-boring but that it failed by never really creating viewer tension despite covering an inherently tense real-life story, and I thought the only truly interesting tidbit from it was the German vs. anti-German tension in the newsroom. But unfortunately thatās crediting a storyline that got less than 10% of the screentime.
FWIW, Leonie Benesch - the German woman in the movie - was the lead in a Best International Feature nominee from last year, and I can more firmly recommend that one. Itās The Teachersā Lounge, and itās on Netflix. Worth checking out sometime if you run across it. It wasnāt on the level of Perfect Days or The Zone of Interest from last year, but I thought it was probably the third-best in last yearās Best International field. I did think it was cool to see that she was apparently bilingual and could show out well in an English-language movie as well this year.

This film is charming while dealing with some heavy subject matter. The characters in the film are stand up comedians so theyāre quipy but without being smugly self satisfied about being quipy like a Marvel movie or a Aaron Sorkin movie. I like when films also reference the actors as well. The film is shot in Canada, has done of great Canadian actors but the lead, Rachel Sennott, is American and thereās a scene where she brings a lot of American flags to a party.
Speaking of actors, everyoneās great. There are a lot of Canadian actors I recognized and Rachel Sennott is phenomenal. Kind of like her frequent writing partner, Ayo Edebiri, youād think she has 20 films under her belt. Sheās that good.

You have to pack a cast-iron stomach for awkward social situations, but given your liking for Rachel Sennott I have to guess youād like it.

I remember seeing it on the TV when I was growing up.
Pretty good. We grew up using a cargo van so the last scene of craming groups of people who definitely donāt belong together for the same ride brought back memories.

I know we probably donāt have a ton of Criterion subscribers here, but yes thatās The Insider making a rare streaming appearance, so someone who hasnāt seen that movie could make good use of a free trial right now.

Itās so tough for me to imagine the original plan on that movie, since it was supposed to be Adam Sandler in the Jamie Foxx role. He was all set to do it, then another project ran over and he had to drop, and they came up with Foxx as a backup. Foxx is damn perfect in that role, and I just have a hard time imagining Sandler - who I fully respect as an actor - being able to master that same tone.

Other than that all Iāve got is Dangerous encounters of the first kind (1980), one of Tsui Harkās first movies, is a pretty insane violent nihilistic movie, well worth checking out. I saw it when it was re-released in theaters here last year, so I assume it is not hard to find good copies of it.
(also pretty depressing to think that this director went from angry punk movies of this kind to now doing official chinese propaganda, although this kind of trajectory is to be expected I guessā¦)
