Iâm sure he was equally dismissive of the overwhelming plaudits he received for making multiple masterpieces in the 70s.

I actually thought this was decent. Did they butcher the source material that badly? Or are you saying the movie was too long and/or bad.

I do think the timing of him making True Lies directly after getting divorced screams out loudly in that specific movie and is hopefully not reflected very clearly in anything he makes these days.
Yeah youâre probably right. Iâm also curious how much of it was taken from the French original (however I assume it would have more of the sexism and none of the big budget action, so I will not be checking it out).
For ârecently divorcedâ movies from famous directors, Cronenbergâs âThe broodâ '79 probably takes the crown. Not spoiling it (itâs a good movie !), but itâs funny to watch it with that fact in mind (it might also not be in great taste eitherâŚ)

Not at all. I thought it was great. Brilliant decision to cast the same actors in all of the different roles.
I just meant itâs an example of a book that many considered impossible to adapt into a movie. Then my girls the Wachowskis got a hold of it and boom.

September 5
One of those movies where the more I thought about it, the less I liked it. There were a fair amount of positives - acting is solid and I was never bored in the 90 minutes (and while I did like The Brutalist a lot, there is something to be said for a movie that isnât 3+ hours long).
But two things bothered me: 1) it seemed like there was too many things in this film that were straight up not believable, like only having one person on hand that speaks German or that scene where the police come in and the director throws them out of the control room (wtf was that about). But more importantly, 2) the subjects are shown in way too positive a light. They fucked up pretty bad on two separate occasions and there is not even a hint of self-reflection. Even the ending graphic that stated that 900 million people watched it. Was that supposed to be a good thing? Especially considering the state of current news media, there really was an opportunity to say something.
Nickel Boys
Going in, I only knew that this was an adaptation of a Colson Whitehead novel that I have not read. I did not know about the unusual directing style (for those that donât know, itâs shown as a first person POV for basically the entire movie, alternating between the two main characters). Had I known about that beforehand, I would have guessed that I would have hated it. And I have read reviews that were negative, but it hooked me right in. Even as someone who has very little in common with the main characters, it was very easy to step into their story. Given the subject matter, itâs not an easy watch (especially because the source novel is based on a real school), but itâs definitely worthwhile. I know this has no chance of winning Best Picture, but if I had a vote, it would be this one that I ranked #1.
Sing Sing
Was expecting a prison movie, but instead was rewarded with a great character driven uplifting story. I really like the way they used former RTA participants for many of their actors. Another great Colman Domingo performance thatâs going to go under the radar, and it was good to see the dude from Sound of Metal again. This really should have gotten a Best Picture nomination.
Anora
Dynamite movie that subtly pivots from comedy to drama and back throughout. There were some scenes that dragged in the middle, but I think that was the point - the party has to stop at some time and youâre left with a slog of a mess to clean up when itâs over. Great performances from not only the title actress, but also Igor, who puts just the right amount of humor into every scene. Ending was absolutely perfect. If itâs this, Brutalist and Conclave in a three-way for Best Picture, Iâm rooting for this, but Iâm glad that weâre going to get a worthy winner no matter what.

Saw this on Kanopy and heard Red Letter Media mention it so I thought, why not?
I hated the first 15 minutes of it. Reading reviews after the fact this seems pretty common. The first time I paused it I expected the movie to be almost over. Nope only 45 minutes into an hour an half movie. I thought damn this is going to be a slog.
By the end of it I was all in.
Agreed, but the competition was pretty strong. Glad heâs at least represented in the screenplay category.

Feels like three of the four acting categories are strong. Supporting Actress including a damn low-impact cameo by Isabella Rossellini is an unfortunate waste of a spot. And the buzz by some is that if Saldana somehow loses, it would most likely be to Rossellini? WTF.
