Speaking of Dunkirk, Quentin Tarantino just did a rewatchables podcast about the film. Eager to give that a listen.
!!!
I will definitely watch this now just to understand any references.
Narrator: he did not watch it
Just watched Dark Waters. Was a bit of a slow start but was quite decent. Definitely would recommend.
Recently watched both Joker and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. I feel I must be losing my ability to appreciate things, because they were both fine, but I really didnāt see the point of either of them. Joker was a little strange in that it seemed to lean very heavily on the time and setting, as well as the obvious echoes of Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy, to provide a context justifying the protagonistās feelings and actions.
Thatās all I can think of for why the motivations of the rioting crowds are just about never even hinted at - I think weāre supposed to just think, Well, it was the the late '70s or whatever, people were just kinda antsy back then. I didnāt have any sense of the character as the Joker by the end, either. It was an OK story about this guy cracking up, I suppose. Iām not sure why it had to involve Batman/the DCU in any way. It could easily not have and very little would change. Everythingās just going to be superheroes for the foreseeable, looks like.
I felt the same way about Joker. He is one of the characters with the least needed backstories of all time. I didnt understand the motivation. It would have been a perfectly fine king of comedy remake (which is essentially what it is.)
I sort of agree with you about the last part, but I donāt think thatās necessarily bad. I think The Dark Knight is a great movie, but itās kind of a remake of Heat. In fact critics applauded it for being a good crime thriller that almost didnāt need Batman.
I didnāt see any Todd Philips movies before this, but I watched Old School a couple of days ago, and now I understand why people were WTF for a different reason with this movie. It is a truly odd choice for him, though perhaps not as surprising in hindsight.
Joker was just not a good movie. The Gary Glitter song choice was maybe the worst I can ever remember in a major movie.
I loved Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. I loved how it played with history and expectation to create tension. The ranch scene was one of the best scenes of the decade for this reason.
Yeah, it was all very watchable and honestly flew by. I just found the end a bit incomprehensible - the climax, not the very last scene. It was sort of fun, but it seemed like it was just the same trick as in Inglourious Basterds. Grand guignol fantasy as preferable to reality. It even made a sort of sense for a war movie, because plenty of those are extremely unrealistic. But I couldnāt put OUATIH in a box, which is fine, I suppose. But I doubt Iāll ever get the urge to re-watch it.
Watched Samsara last night - itās a 90 minute documentary with no speech, just footage and music. The idea is sort of like slice of life shots from around the globe, and it was promoted as a sort of meditative reflection on humanity and the various ways in which we live.
I thought it was great. Some really moving scenes, and absolutely beautiful shots. Glad I came across it.
Check out the Qatsi trilogy (same cinematographer) if you liked it. Iāve only seen the first one, but it was very memorable.
Just started Midsommer, and it has my full blessing!
Honestly I hated Midsommar and Hereditary. Just unpleasant to watch, a lot of the āhorrorā was cheap and manipulative imo, but otoh lots of people absolutely loved these movies so maybe Iām the weirdo.
I didnāt like Hereditary because it felt like two movies mashed together. Midsommar was a perfect movie to me, but one Iād probably wonāt watch again. Itās not really a movie you can just pop in with friends.
Finished The Two Popes. Itās an oddly touching movie
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood - meh. If you watch only this or the recent documentary on Mr. Rogers take the documentary by a country mile.
I just hate that the movie cover looks like Julius Caesar
you have been perusing cover-art and descriptions !
