Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 1)

Saw Game Night last night. Very disappointing for a well-rated film. Much of the humour fell flat imo. Jason Bateman was phoning it in. Character drama was dull. Not good folks, we hate to see it.

Tarantino was on the Rewatchables podcast. Heā€™s doing three, all movies of his choosing, and they started with Dunkirk. I thought it was a good episode even though I donā€™t hold that movie in as high regard as he and one of the hosts do. Canā€™t wait for the next two.

Strong disagreement. This was one of the funniest movies Iā€™ve ever seen. I went back to see it again in the theater.

I will be the centrist that says some parts were really funny and others not so much.

It had a few good points, Jesse Plemons was good, there were a few laughs, but if there were any really funny bits I missed them. It was all slapstick and smart-assed pop culture asides. Itā€™s driven by a plot which ought to have characters in danger, but the movie never even tries to create any tension, it instantly defuses any scene which ought to be tense. The result is this weird tonal blancmange which tries to subsist entirely on one-liners, most of which arenā€™t funny.

It would have worked better as a black comedy with some real menace in it and the laughs used to defuse tension, which is what I assumed I was getting from the poster:

Interesting! I experienced it as a black comedy with just enough menace to need those big laughs to defuse the tension.

Why not reel to reel?

Finally theyā€™re releasing it

Hopefully itā€™s the Demon Bear Saga

I hope itā€™s good. Those actors have literally grown from children to adults waiting for the movie to release (2.5 years).

Made by the same folks that did the excellent adaptation of The Fault in Our Stars, and Josh Boone is a real fan of the old New Mutants comic line. He gets what makes that team special.

Iā€™m really curious to see how it turned out. There were of course massive reshoots scheduled, but those got canceled, and instead Boone was reportedly given the freedom to recut the movie to fit his vision, not Foxā€™s, and to remove any references to existing X-Men films so that if itā€™s a success, Disney will consider using this as a jump-point for introducing mutants into the MCU.

I donā€™t think that will happen unless the movie is a massive commercial and critical success, but early test screenings put it on the same level as the first Deadpool. That would be amazing.

Anyone seen Two Popes? I like the stars but am not into Catholicism so idk what to think here

Itā€™s good. Deals with regret, religious conservative vs religious liberal conceptions of the good. Hopkins is good but the other actor is extremely good

Iā€™m curious to see everything that happened behind the scenes too. My understanding is that the reshoots were because Fox wanted it to be way more horror than superhero, which doesnā€™t seem like a bad way to go even if they didnā€™t keep any of the reshoots. I like Marvel movies when they lean into another genre other than superhero, like Captain America 2 did making it more like a spy thriller.

I canā€™t see it being a massive success on par with, say, Thor or Iron Man though as it seems geared more towards the teen market. Which is fine.

darn good if you havenā€™t already.

I had seen him in stuff but I was typing while walking and didnā€™t have time to look it up!

Everyone keeps talking about how amazing Irishman is, so I checked out this guyā€™s earlier movies. Have you guys seen Goodfellas? Itā€™s not bad!
