Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 1)

I watched Annihilation last night. Has a connection to military.

so-so movie, but Natalie Portman was nice

Sick. See if she can get you to serve as a seat filler for the Oscars. I hear you get the same goodie bag as the celebrities.

Maybe I will watch them at some pointā€¦ I kept thinking Iā€™m not watching them because I donā€™t care, but I think theyā€™re viscerally brutal in a way thatā€™s a little too much on top of reality these days.

I have not. Is it on any streaming platforms?

This movie was as close to LSD as a movie has ever been. Or so I hear.

Jennifer Jason Leigh was great in that, too. Iā€™m happy sheā€™s got a thriving career again. Sheā€™s also killing it in the Netflix show Atypical.

What do you mean? Or is this a spoiler?

The books are excellent.

Thought Dunkirk sucked FWIW.

A good number of the episodes are available at utube here.(though it seems to start in reverse order at episode 13, easily corrected) A couple appear to be blocked in my country( you in the states?) Anyway, those 3 omitted episodes(installments 4,7 & 12) can prolly be found elsewhere without too much difficulty.

Magnolia is my go-to acid trip movie.

JJL was good. Also, the guy from the new star wars trilogy plays Portmanā€™s hubby!

another kickass docu-series is this 23-episode epic on the Cold War. Super binge-worthy.

Itā€™s not a spoiler per se but you still might want to figure it out yourself while watching.

In case you donā€™t:

The events of Dunkirk are told from 3 different perspectives: the navy rescue operation (taking ~1 week), the army on the beach (~1 day) and the air force providing cover (~1 hour). Despite taking vastly different real life time lengths they are told in parallel and itā€™s not made obvious from the beginning (at least it wasnā€™t to me).
I havenā€™t seen anything like this before and I bet itā€™s the reason why Dunkirk got the Oscar for film editing.

Cosmatos admits a dislike for Baby Boomersā€™ spiritual ideals, an issue he addresses in Beyond the Black Rainbow .[40] For him, the Boomersā€™ search for alternative belief systems made them dabble in the dark side of occultism, which in turn corrupted their quest for spiritual enlightenment.[14] The use of psychedelic drugs for mind-expansion purposes is also explored,[41] although Cosmatosā€™s take on it is ā€œdark and disturbingā€, a ā€œbrand of psychedelia that stands in direct opposition to the flower child, magic mushroom peace tripā€ wrote a reviewer.[42]

I love this. Are you going to watch the TV show? Iā€™ll watch anything with Jennifer Connelly. Plus it sounds good!

After a little thought, I think I will watch it and then come back and read the spoiler.

Mandy. I remember you recommended this film some time ago.

You and I will coauthor a book entitled, ā€œSumo and Cosmatos.ā€

The contents will simply be a continuation of the workā€™s titular itemization of things we like.

Chapter 1) Metal Music*

Chapter 2) Amy Klobuchar

*trollyā€™s less-intrepid endorsement

The car crash scene was brilliant.

I enjoyed Knives Out. Very well written and well acted. Great cast.

Dunkirk was good, but the sound was the best part imo so I imagine the theater experience was better than home viewing.

Just watched Destroyer with Nicole Kidman.

Not bad, but not great. The estranged child angle is so played-out.
