iirc, the main reason some of the personal finance stuff got pushed out is because discussions about exploiting the pandemic for personal gain was rubbing some people the wrong way, justifiably so I think. The unmet demand is from people who want to discuss the economy without hearing about the market gambools of upper middle class people who clearly aren’t at risk of any real hardship.
It is not mine. I may or may not have a couple of gimmicks, none of which I’ve used in any untoward ways. I’m jealous that I didn’t think of badpostingdog first.
Personal investing/stocks
Personal finance (rent negotiation, buying a car/house, leaving a job, etc)
The Economy (politics oriented)
I think they should be three separate threads. As someone who would post a lot in all of them, there are times I want to very quickly read everything in the investing/stocks category without having to skip over everything else. I also don’t want the other stuff to no longer be showing up as unread, because I want to go back and read it.
I don’t see why three separate threads is a big deal. There’s a lot of stuff that could overlap, but I think we should focus on what does the most good for those of us who use those threads the most.
Think this might be dealt with by having a business/finance/economics subforum at this point. Seems like cuse is right in his description of the 3 main topics and agree that it would be reasonable to have thread for each. Problems with thread titles and derails leading to more threads that could muck up Sundry or the main forum would be less of a concern if they’re isolated into their own subforum.
I don’t either actually but the last time this came up most who offered an opinion said they use the Categories set up in their preferences. I also think that arrangement is the default for new visitors and is definitely the best way to introduce anyone to what the forum is about.
The default is Latest. I find Categories to be a far more efficient way to keep on top of what I want to follow, but I’ve learned over the past year that this is a fringe minority opinion.
A tip of the hat to the moderators for carving off the thread derails. I was an offender. As a newer member, I don’t use the categories and just let threads “soak” and then roll though the ones I’m interested in. In the future, I will be more vigilant about participating in derails. It gets easy to do in the COVID thread as I spend so much of my read time in that thread, given current events and my anxieties.
