There are two ways to look at that.
How can anyone not like a dog?
Agreed, who will badpostingdog the badpostingdog when the badpostingdog inevitably gets drunk on their badpostingdog power?
Itās gotten kind of annoying but Cuse makes an interesting point that itās a bit of a circuit breaker and de-escalator.
Ideally Mike would absorb and understand why his posting is so bad and why creating spoof accounts to back him up is unacceptable, but (feel free to continue in your own words).
The joke only lands as a funny, deflationary joke if i) you think itās bad posting, ii) a majority thinks itās bad posting and iii) thereās every chance the poster will reflect and think itās bad posting. No one person could ever thread that needle most of the time. Maybe some sort of vote threshold based on regular readers of the thread triggering it could do it, but then the implication of mass censure might be too much of a downer.
(Obviously if I could trigger the dog myself after this post I would)
Are we seriously arguing over badpostingdog?
Donāt care if I disagree with what is or what isnāt a bad post. A dog barking as a reply will always make me laugh.
For what my opinion as an unremarkable forum member is worth:
The dog has 7 total posts. Iāve viewed it as a cute gimmick up to this point, whether I agree or disagree with their assessment of which post is bad.
Meanwhile we have one of the highest volume posters in the forum who canāt string together two coherent sentences in a row likely making fake accounts to back up their bad posting. Letās be more concerned about the negative effect that has on the community than a dog who barks once every 10 days.
This isnāt super clear who this is, can you clarify?
I would have taken the over as well, especially after the complaints itt. Recency bias playing a part in that I guess.
I find him entertaining. Iām more concerned about senior members of the community who feel the need to lob personal attacks towards each other constantly. Itās explicitly against our rules and is not a good look for the forum.
One moron is not gonna tank the forum. Bickering and fighting will.
+1 to what jmakin said, but something else occurred to me recently that I wanted to mention about a different moderation task.
I think the moderators here have done an excellent job splitting posts into new topics when things have gotten significantly off-track. In some cases, the new topic has been inherently interesting to me, while in other cases splitting the thread has allowed me to focus only on the original topic that I cared about. But in all cases, that nuts-and-bolts moderation has made for a much better UP experience. So thanks for that.
As evidence of how deceptively difficult it can be to effectively split threads, I am apparently doing a terrible job of creating two separate threads for:
- Stocks and general economic news
- personal finance matters (e.g., refinancing decisions, negotiating rent, college costs)
Someone help put some structure on the mess Iāve created.
Most people seem to find badpostingdog funny so whatever as long as it doesnāt belong to Cuse or one of the other people involved in the argument that the dog jumps into. Otherwise we have the same problem as with Mikelikesorgies creating a gimmick to fake additional support with bad faith posting.
Is it ok if I just start barking at obviously horrible posts rather than trying to form an argument that is 100% of the time going to be ignored anyway?
ruff ruff, grrrr, ruff
testing this out on an obviously bad post
Meowwwwww
Who owns badpostingcat?
just kidding, nobody owns a cat
I would really like the competing economy threads issue solved, as the main forum one has immediately been taken over by discussion of personal finances. And yes, I accept some responsibility for creating the current mess earlier today.
Rephrasing my previous suggestion from one of those threads (I have no idea which):
-
Close both current threads
-
Start 2 new ones
-
All non-personal economic and financial stuff goes in the Politics category. For now at least, no cute names or subheadings, just call it The Economy. Discussions of personal finances in that topic will be met with
immediate and brutal moderationgentle suggestions to take the conversation to the appropriate place. -
All personal financial stuff goes in Sundry Chitchat. Initially, no cutesy names here either. Just Personal FInance.
- Yes, this is a good idea
- No, this is a bad idea (provide explanation/alternative suggestions)

I donāt think we even need two threads as there isnāt all that much activity in the combined thread in the first place.
