Police later learned Kohberger’s phone did not “ping” in the area at the time of the murders, which they said in the affidavit is not uncommon. Police say they found the phone stopped reporting to the network around 2:47 a.m.
“This is done by subjects in an effort to avoid alerting law enforcement that a cellular device associated with them was in a particular area where a crime is committed,” the affidavit said.
However, the affidavit says after looking through the phone’s history, it appeared that Kohberger visited the area of the King Road house a dozen times over several months leading up to the night of the murders.
Seems like he did have it off at the time of the murder. They caught him because he pinged around there at other times.
Seems odd that people don’t think to leave a phone in a friend’s car they know will be driving around or put on a bus or something so it’d ping somewhere else instead of suspiciously stop pinging right when a murder happens.
DNA was his. They confirmed it by comparing it to his dad’s DNA which they had from discarded trash. They had already zeroed in on the kid because of the car. DNA was just used to confirm.
I guess the prevailing theory is that she was super fucked-up on drugs. But if that were the case, whatever recollection she’s passed along would be meaningless. I dunno.
There are a million people on reddit claiming that it is very common to freeze up when you are scared and do nothing. Also, apparently, it is common to call your boss/aunt/cousin to tell them someone is trying to kill you/kidnap you/break into your house instead of just calling the police yourself.
I agree with both of these things. People under stress will do all sorts of weird shit if they aren’t absolutely sure and practiced about what to do. It’s why we have fire drills. It’s way better to have people rolling their eyes as they march outside thinking this is another dumbass fire drill that it is to have a bunch of panicked people thinking, “THIS MOTHERFUCKING BUILDING IS ON FIRE!”
